I am looking at a Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKX 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s" my motherboard has only SATA 3.0Gb/s ports so I guess my question is "will the hard drive be backward compatible with my 3.0 ports?"

Yes it will, but you will not get the 6.0 Gb/s speeds.
