Don't get me wrong.. I was using Tetris behavior as a performance benchmark, and concluded
that if it was running slow, then my whole system was slow - a wrong conclusion it appears now.
Understand that I wasn't engaging you or GTG for the frivolous wish to play Tetris like I used to -
please don't draw that conclusion - that would be wrong. I would never abuse GTG that way.
Just wanted to make that clear.
If I never play another game of Tetris, it'll be a good thing because it's a terrible waste of time!
I tried your link many times but it timed out every time - but not to worry..
I'll be running the memtest tonight and will let you know the results tomorrow - I'm kind of hoping
it'll find some bad ram to explain those random crashes which are still in play, I think.

NO I was only offering a link to the game to try a new file even though it was only a demo version.
I think part of the issue is it is such a older game with compatibility with win95.
The game is a secondary issue with me as I am more interested in the system as a whole responding quicker now with the steps we have taken so far. The only reason for the memtest is to see if that may part of the Tetris issue but IMHO I don't believe it will be showing any errors. Let me know in the morning when you have the test results.

The thing I can't get around is that the game was faster before I reinstalled XP.
I'm not mistaken on this point, so I don't think it being an older game has bearing on the issue.
It ran faster before, it runs slower after - that's the mystery I may have to live with.
And I agree.. not much hope for bad ram.
I'll let you know

Ran memtest overnight for 8 full passes - it detected zero errors.
No issues with most recent 2 boots or internet connects.
But I'd like to keep the case open for another few days - can we do that?
I'd hate to start over in a day or two with a new topic equal to this topic.

Yep try it out for a couple of days and let me know.
I'm still thinking a bad installation for Tetris is the issue that is causing it.
I run all my systems with the cases open unless like case which has 7 system fans in it but my other 4 systems all run without sides on them. But I'd like to keep the case open for another few days - can we do that?
No need to do this as it will all be due to the same problem unless there is a completely new issue that arises. Anything to do with the slowness or boot issue you can just paste back here.I'd hate to start over in a day or two with a new topic equal to this topic.

Hi mod..
Just figured out another slowness test independent of Tetris.
Very easy.
Open notepad, press and hold down any key, say 'A', and closely watch what happens on your machine(s).
On my machine, it immediately display the character 'A', then pauses momentarily, then displays AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.. as I expect.
On my netbook, it also pauses but only for a much shorter duration that the desktop machine.
The netbook runs the Atom processor at 1.6GHz while the desktop runs at 2.2GHz so the desktop has extra overhead it seems.

Remind me please how much memory on the netbook?

My Lenovo netbook only has .99 GB of memory - running XP SP3.
My desktop has 1.93 GB, also running XP SP3.

OK I know I probably had you do this before but please humor me for a moment if you would.
On the system that seems to have the slowing problem do the following.
Go to HERE and run the Crucial online scanner.
This will give you the exact memory configuration for your system.
You do not have to buy the memory from there, but write down the information and if you need assistance in purchasing the upgrade memory GTG can assist with suggestions also.

This is the first time you've asked me to run the Crucial scan.
It found 4 sticks of 512KB.
Not sure what you'd suggest I upgrade my memory.
It's same memory both before and after I reinstalled XP.

2 gigs should be enough for sure on the system that is running slow.
How is the system running other then the tetris and the notepad tests?

It's running just fine - quite reliable - no issues.

Well unless there is another issue I would say it is just a glitch then since the system seems to work perfectly other then Tetris.
