Hello guys,

I'm so thankful to have found your board! I definitely have Aurora on my PC and I have McAfee Virus Scan, Firewall Plus, Anti-Spyware and recently added Ad-Aware and Spybot.

I have run these for hours and hours each day and obviously, this evil little plague keeps coming back.

I'm wondering if you guys would suggest me just wiping out my entire hard drive and reinstalling Windows and everything else I have on it. Will this effectively and permanently remove it? Or do you think I should try to remove it myself with your expert hand holding?

Please advise and THANK GOD for you! I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
(The really distressed female)

::Report End

I had earthlink like two years ago and uninstalled it after the free trial because I didn't like it but I guess it has stuff on my PC still?

I know I have this Aurora thing because I've seen it popup briefly and I've seen this thing called "Buddy" in my McAfee Firewall that I BLOCKED all access for. I have no clue what it is. I've had numerous notices of trojans and a notice about a malicious script that McAfee notified me about so I have to keep telling it to stop it. I've removed everything that I was told to by Virus Scan but it keeps coming back on restart. Once I connect to the internet, it's all happening again. LUCKILY, I now have found you amazing fellows!

EDIT ADD: I noticed when looking more closely at my Hijack This log, the list of "trusted zones" is from my SecureIE. All of them are correct EXCEPT ONE! I have NO CLUE what "neededware.com" is and when I try to remove it from the trusted zones section in SecureIE, it won't let me remove it. I can remove any other ones but that neededware one. What's up with that? I went to the site and it just has a plain "under construction page with a link to their "terms of use". Looks fishy, especially since I can't remove it from the trusted zone section. ALSO, that suspicious script is still there. Anytime I go to Settings-control panel-User Accounts-Change the way users log on or off, I get this message from McAfee Virus Scan: "Suspicious Script Stopped! The file mshta.exe contains suspicious scripting activity. The script is attempting to call the RegRead method within the IWshShell3 object. File Path is mshta.exe. The script execution has been stopped." -- When I tell it to stop, it closes the change the way users log on or off choice. (sigh)EDIT END.

Please help me. I'm almost braindead trying to remove this evil ick from my PC. :tazz:

Thank you!!

Hi Moore,

We don't need to go to the extent of wiping your drive, we can fix this in no time. I will be here to hold your hand all of the way.

The first thing you need to do is download Hijackthis from the link below, unzip it and install it into a new folder that you need to create (for example C:\HJT), (To create a new folder, click the link HERE if you do not know how) and run it and when it creates the log, copy and paste the entire log in this post.

HJT

Once i have that i can give you easy instructions to follow.

Regards,

Usetobe

Hi Moore,

Looking at your log and ewido report i cannot see any sign of Aurora. There is some malware that we will clean up and see how that goes.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Please download Cleanup from here:
Cleanup. Do not run it yet.

Set PC to show hidden files (click link if you do not know how)LINK

Carry out a free online virus scan from the following link. Type in name, for company type anything you like, add email address in relevant boxes. Allow it to repair anything it may find

Kaspersky

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Rescan with HJT and checkmark the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://start.earthlink.net/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.earthlink...ton/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.earthlink...ton/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.earthlink...ton/search.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.earthlink...ton/search.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com
O16 - DPF: NDWCab - http://www.neededware.com/ndw.cab

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click FIX CHECKED.

Using windows explorer locate and delete the following file

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

Now run Cleanup to clear out temp files , junk etc.

Reboot normally, rescan with HJT and post the log back.

Hi Usetobe:

I've done everything you have instructed. I was however, not able to find C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm in order to remove it. It just wasn't there. It also wasn't on my hijack this log when I ran it in safe mode.

Here is the new hijack this log after rebooting normally:

How does it look? Are we out of the woods yet? Also, my PC is just running slooooow now. (sigh) AND, that script warning keeps happening. I've attached a screen shot of it. This happens each time I go into Settings/control panel/user accounts/change the way users log on and off. What is this?

Looking forward to your reply. THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN for your assistance. It's very much appreciated.

Take care! :tazz:

Having researched mshta.exe, The process called mshta.exe, is used within Windows to allow the running of HTML Applications (.HTA Files). Mshta.exe is not required for Windows to work correctly.

In the past there has been an exploit of this and Mcafee is known to give this alert.

Please do the following (you will need your XP installation disc)

Type the following commands in the Run dialog box: (Start>Run)

sfc /scannow

It will scan system files and carry out repair if found to be incorrect.

Let me know the outcome

Hi Usetobe:

I did what you asked, I did the start run and typed in the run box sfc /scannow. I had my installation disk with me just in case it prompted me to insert it. It never did. It just ran it's scan and then once it was completed, it went away with no notification. Does this mean everything is alright?

Also, I ran a McAfee Virus Scan last night because my PC is running really slow. It's better than before, as I'm not getting those popups that say "Aurora" on them, nor receiving notification from McAfee that I have "this" trojan and "that" trojan. Ewido took care of that for me, BUT... this is what came up in my scan. Screen shot attached. This is after doing all the other steps in our previous posts.

What do I do from here? :tazz: Right now, these guys in my screen shot are quarantined. I haven't done anything with them as of yet. Waiting on your expertise! Look forward to hearing from you!

THANK YOU! ;)

Hi Usetobe:

I did the free Panda Active Scan and it found one infected file/spyware. It did not give me the option to clean or delete anything. It gave only the option to save the log and scan again. I saved the log. It is posted below along with the new Hijackthis log. Thank you! :tazz:

Hi Moore/aquarius

Boot PC into safe mode again,

Using windows explorer locate the following file and delete it:

C:\Documents and Settings\Lora\SSK3_B5 Verticlick 8.exe

Let me know if the file is not found or cannot be deleted.

Reboot PC normally and Then open up ewido, update it and carry out one last scan and post the log back

Hi Usetobe:

I could not boot into safe mode, again. I don't know what's wrong with my PC and the F8 thing. Tried tapping, tried holding it down right at the splash screen, etc. Anyway, I said "forget it" and made it manually go into safe mode via msconfig. That worked.

I was able to find the file and delete it. I removed it from my recycle bin in safe mode. I booted normally from safe mode (via msconfig before leaving safe mode) and ran ewido. (It was already up to date). It didn't find anything. The log will be below.

Here's my question -- how do I know for sure everything is gone? Some programs find things and others don't. My PC is still running very slowly so I'm not sure what to do at this point. My daughter is upset because I won't let her use the PC until I know for sure it's clean. LOL! :tazz: (teenagers, sigh).

Here's the log. Look forward to hearing from you! Thanks again!

Hi Aquarius,

From your Ewido scan and your HJT log ......

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Have you defraged recently, i would suggest that.

As your system is now clean you are now in a position to upgrade to SP2 that offfers more protection and plugs several vulnerabilities.

Moore , there is now no reason why Daddy can't let you on the internet, however watch the sites you go to, don't open emails you are not sure of, don't click on strange links in emails or instant messengers and be sensible.

If you follow my advice above i am sure you will have happy safe surfing
