Hello all,

I have a problem with a newly setup WDS, I receive an IP address after doing a PXE boot however tftp times out. These are the things I have tried :-

- Allowing WDS to access more UDP ports between 50000 and 65000

- Restart WDS service

- Tried different ethernet cables, different floor ports

- Tested using a different machine, get the same results

- Telnet over port 5040 which WDS is using, shows connectivity

- DHCP and DNS currently used

- DNS operational and resolving

- Logs show failure on port 69 over UDP

- Checked services using port 69 , cannot see that it's allocated

- Set reg key to limit byte size over tftp

- No luck and problem still exists

Hi,

I don't have experience with WDS but i have with PXE boot using other solutions...

During the WDS installation it should install The Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) service, check if its installed and also make sure you do this part:
The following UDP ports must be open on the WDS server and on the firewall:

Port 67 (DHCP)

Port 69 (TFTP)

Port 4011 (PXE)

From the article Planning for PXE Initiated Operating System Deployments.

Port 69 UDP is where the TFTP server should respond. I know this isn't a big help but maybe you get on the right track.

Good luck.

Have you tried putting the WDS server and the workstation on the same switch without relying on patchpanels/cable runs?

Yes I have tried this aswell. We are currently in the process of setting up a new server which will be set up with WDS and a few other things. I can't see any further problems happening.

Please archive this thread, no further response is required

Many thanks
Michael
