Non operational optical drives

I had tried that previously and it wasn't of any help. The brand new cable also didn't provide function to the second drive. This pc is definitely a one optical unit and the last person who checks in for the day gets to use that one.!

Ok purely for testing purposes only can you swap the HDD and the optical drive IDE connections on the MB and see if all drives work.

IDE configuration it seems which means are the jumpers on the back in the right placement.
Since the cdrom and hard drive are on the same ribbon apparently I would suggest setting the hard drive for master with slave present and the cdrom for slave.

This problem is going to remain the perpetual mystery. Thanks for all the help though. I had hoped to learn something new that might apply in the future. On to other projects.

Did you set the jumpers on the back as I suggested or are the drives on different cables?
