I've runThis computer started showing signs of spyware infection and so I started scanning. Using a combination of MBAM/Spybot/Hijackthis/TDSkiller/RemoveFakeAntivirus/Unhide I was able to remove TDS, FakeAV, and etc in Safe Mode on XP Home SP3. Had installed a current version of AVG and it began detecting the cryptic.eay infection in netbt.sys. I ran OTL per the instructions in another post I read and have attached the logs. Please note that I do use a proxy server so that is normal.

Thanks!

Download the attached file. Save it and then right click on it and Extract All. Right click on netbt.reg and MERGE. Right click on legacy_netbt.reg and MERGE. (you may get an error with the legacy one. That's OK.)

Then verify that you have the file:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\netbt.sys

It should have a date 4/14/2008 and be 159 KB (162816)

If not my next post will have it as a zipped attachment so wait and download it before you go on.

If you have trouble seeing the file:
Double-click on the My Computer icon.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.
Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK button and exit My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Copy the text in the code box by highlighting and Ctrl + c

ComboFix
:!: If you have a previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy. :!:

:!: It must be saved to your desktop, do not run it :!:

:!: Disable your Antivirus software when downloading or running Combofix. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well. See: http://www.bleepingc...opic114351.html

Download and Save this file -- to your Desktop -- from either of these two sources:
http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Doubleclick on ComboFix to start the program.

* :!: Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.

* A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix. Allow it to install the Recovery Console then Continue. When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit and answer 'Yes' to save changes.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

A file will be created at => C:\Combofix.txt. I'll need to see that in your reply.

Download TDSSKiller:
http://support.kaspe.../tdsskiller.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it.
Double click on TDSSKiller.exe (Vista or Win 7 must right click and Run As Admin)
If TDSSKiller alerts you that the system needs to reboot, please consent.
When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Run TDSSKiller again but this time:
before you hit the Scan hit Change Parameters and check the two items under Additional Options. OK then Scan.
In this mode it is prone to false positives so do not change the SKIP option to DELETE unless it says TDSS.
When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
uncheck trace disk IO calls
Click the "Scan" button to start scan
On completion of the scan (Note if the Fix button is enabled (not the FixMBR button) and tell me) click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

Thanks again for your help. legacy_netbt.reg didn't merge as you suspected. I've included all the logs. aswMBR.exe detected Aluroot and the Fix button was enabled. Hope this includes everything you requested.

Thanks

You have an infected netbt.sys on your desktop. I hope that's not mine. Delete it.

The final OTL scan didn't work. Expect you hit the wrong button. Try it again and make sure you hit Run Scan.

Ok. I ended up running it two more times because I forgot the Extra registry group settings the first time. The one log is the first run without the Extra group and the send two are of course the send run with them. Also, in the last post I said that aswMBR.exe had the Fix button enabled. I didn't hit the Fix button if I was supposed to. The copy of netbt.sys on the desktop was for backup before I got your copy. I deleted it.

Thanks

Start, Run, services.msc , OK then find the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service and right click on it and select Properties. Change the Startup Type: to Automatic and then hit Apply. Try to START the service. Do you get an error message?

BITS is already started. Do you want me to stop it and then do what you said?

No that was a mistake on my part. I missed where it was already running.

When you ran VEW you just ran the System logs. Can you run it again but this time ask it for Applications?

How is it running by the way. Any sign of your bug?

Sorry, been a long process. Thanks for staying with me, by the way. Here is the application one. Nothing out of the ordinary. The main way I would know is if I ran an AVG scan. I'll start one now.

AVG didn't detect it in the previous place, but did in the System Restore area, quarantined it, and I deleted it from quarantine. Ran two additional full scans and all seems clear. If I have multiple user accounts, will anything need to be done in the other accounts? Do you think this install of Windows is safe to continue using? Would any additional vulnerabilities be left outside the normal ones with Windows XP? Would the infections that have been cleaned left anything behind that would be a concern?
