Download the latest version of Ad-Aware from here (if you already have Ad-Aware installed, make sure that it is the latest version and always go online and update it before you run it).

After installing AAW, and before running the program, you must FIRST update the reference file following these instuctions. (and you must always do this before you run the program at any later date).

Now do the following:

Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Press "Scan Now"

- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
- Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives. It will find a number of spyware files and registry keys. Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

Now press "Next" again. It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.



Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Reboot

Run Hijack This again and post back a fresh log.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

While you are doing this, I will check your log and look for your new one.

FYI: I found two worms, one hkey (?), and some cookies.. they are all gone now (i hope)

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ Microsoftx.exe (could also be C:\WINNT\System32, etc.)

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, and let us know how your system's working.

First I would like you to know there is something you should see on my site at: http://pubweb.csf.edu/~pjroberts/

I ran the fix. Then rebooted to safe mode.. "un-hid" the files... searched found nothing.. rebooted to normal mode.. "un-hid" the files went into safe mode, still no "microsoftx.exe" to be found anywhere..?

This is the log from my reboot to normal mode.. could I be in a good place now?

I live in a house with 4 other AmeriCorp volunteers and 4 Christian Brothers and they all have heard about you.. thanks!

The cleaner professional 4.1 has offered to "disable VBScript and JScript. do you want me to do that?" huh?

And do you see any things that are not "bad" but could be done away with?

You may want to install Sun's Java instead of Microsoft's VM, but I wouldn't disable them--unless you're very paranoid (or careless).

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use).
