Hi all!

Im looking for a laptop that is as user serviceable as possible.

I have been using Ibm's t42p as solid laptops for work. with 1.7M and 2gb ram the thing flies and has more speed than I will ever need but I have purchased 3 of them in the last 3 months because they have motherboard issues. and it seems most of them on the market now are too old and are bound to suffer from the same problem. I can't purchase a new mobo and buying refurbished ones is a waste of time since they have simply been reheated.

The t42 has been a legendary laptop for its speed and design. years after it was released still runs windows 7 faster than a lot of tops

So is there a budget laptop out there with great performance that is as reliable as a ak47?

Obviously I want to spend as little as possible. the t42 cost me 250 bucks loaded up with 2 gigs of ram so I don't want to spend much more than that.

I tried looking at other IBM models but they arent as good.

I really like my desktop computer because when something goes wrong I just swap out what ever is bad and keep running. I would like to do the same with a laptop.

Im not afraid to buy used or refurbished and software is not something I want to pay for since I allready have it

Thanks a bunch!!

I am fond of the HP laptops(not compaq's) simply because there are so many out there i can always buy a cheap broken one off ebay to repair any ones i have. Ebay has almost 9000 HP laptops for sale and only dell has a higher number(11000). I personally think dell uses cheaper parts so i am not interested in them. I usually buy a new laptop every 6 months and sell my old one at the same time. I buy for about $450 or so and sell my old for $200-250. I buy laptops off ebay and from pawn shops around my area for friends that want cheaper than new prices. Usual price is in the $200-250 range for dual core 2.0 gig proc - 320-500 gig HD laptops. I just bought a HP G62 i3 - 2.4 gig proc with 500 G HD from a pawn shop for a friend for $250. It's a good laptop but i don't like it because it does NOT have a set of number keys on the right side. I like having the keyboard exactly like a desktop keyboard. My friend is very happy with the laptop so i guess it's OK.

So that is my opinion so take it for what it's worth. While i don't fix many laptops its nice to have parts available when i need them.
