Hi Thatman,

Well, I'm leaving town for work again for a few days (I work for an airline; that's why all the time gone. Kinda sucks.) So, I won't be able to post the logs till Sat night again.

As far as the drives, I uninstalled the drivers, shut down, pulled the cables, started and shut down again, reconnected the ribbons and rebooted, and the problem remains. All the drivers seem to be there, the problem seems to be that windows can't load them or use them. Dell tech support is useless, but I'm still working on it. If you have any other ideas about that I'd be glad to hear them. If not, do you have any ideas on how to back up 1.5 gig of data without a cd burner? It exceeds the data storage limit of both my email box and my personal website. Driving me nuts! :-)

Thanks again...

Hi stearmandriver

You can reinstall XP and leave all your files still on the disk this way replace's the existing windows xp with a new version you will lose all the windows update's.
It delete's all the windows file's

Or you can buy a hard drive in stall window onto the new drive the copy the file's you need to keep then you can format the old drive.

I will look for a fix for you till your return.

Hey Thatman,

Ok, fixed the drives. It was pretty easy actually; I found a Microsoft tutorial that explained the fix. All you have to do is delete a couple registry entries, and let Windows rebuild them on the next reboot. Problem solved. Apparently it's a known issue when certain components of certain CD burning software are removed. I hadn't intentionally removed any burning software, but I'm wondering if that Cleanup Manager program didn't remove something that caused the problem. Even if so, it was still completely worth running. For reference, if you run into anyone else with the same problem, the fix is here:

http://support.micro...b/314060/EN-US/

Now, as for the spyware situation: I do seem to be getting a pop-up or two, so I don't think I'm clean yet. The latest Panda scan found 6 items it can't remove; see log below. Like I said, I restored my system back to an earlier state in an attempt to fix my drive problem, so I may have picked up a few things that we'd already deleted. Sorry, won't happen again...

Hi stearmandriver

I am happy ypu found that fix it will come in handy, have not see cleanup cause any problems like this I think it is likly that the problem was due to the scumbags on your system.

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

C:\Program Files\palmOne\register.exe<-- This one do you use this porgram.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
C:\Temp\salm_*.dat
C:\Temp\salmau.dat
C:\Temp\salm_gdf.dat[b]
C:\Temp\salm_kyf.dat
Let the system reboot.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
[B]Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.log
We will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Hey Thatman,

1. palmone/register.exe - that's from the software for a palmone handheld device that I do use. I've noticed lately that the register program does randomly run itself pretty often, even though I've register the device (probably several times). I just thought it was a glitch in the Palmone software, but if you suspect it's something else, I can remove the register.exe program - as long as it doesn't affect the operation of the rest of the palmone software. I wouldn't think it would.

2. Ran killbox, told it to delete those four files on restart. It restarted my system and I never got any error messages from it, so I assume it worked.

3. Ran Pandascan again: see log below.

Hi stearmandriver

Try this http://www.innovativ...aller/index.htm
Run the powerful Registry cleaner, defragmenter and optimizer which will help you keep your Registry fast, clean,
This should remove the left over reistery key from savenow.

It is a 14 day fully working free trial

Post back and let me know.

Ran Uninstaller Pro, and it cleaned and fixed a bunch of stuff, but even after a reboot, Panda returned this:

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/SaveNow No disinfected Windows Registry

Tenacious little bugger...

Thanks,
Joe

Hi stearmandriver

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Read this Demystifying the Windows Registry

Most of the following registery entry will have been removed.you may find a number of reg keys for this savenow program but they are harmless and are just left overs.
Useless with no program to run.
If you find a value that is not on this list please post the value's found thanks.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Delete the ‘SaveNow’, ‘WhenUSave’, ‘WhenUSearch’ or ‘VVSN’ values. Reboot and you should be able to delete the ‘SaveNow’, ‘Save’, ‘WhenUSearch’, ‘WhenUSearchWHSE’ or ‘VVSN’ folder inside ‘Program Files’.

To remove the ActiveX objects installed by the Download and Db variants, open the ‘Downloaded Program Files’ folder inside the Windows folder, and delete the SaveNow object. The name of this is ‘WhenUDownload’ in the Download variant, ‘FC327B3F-377B-4CB7-8B61-27CD69816BC3’ in the Db variant, and ‘E2F2B9D0-96B9-4B25-B90C-636ECB207D18’ in the WUInst variant.

Thanks, Thatman, I'll look into it when I get home. Am I understanding this right, that the registry entry is harmless because the program it refers to is gone? So it would be good to remove, but if I don't get to it right away, there's no real harm done, right?

Thanks,
Joe

Hi stearmandriver

Yep that is right

This program is good at finding Malware run it and see if it find's save now.

Please download SpyBot V1.4 http://www.majorgeek...wnload2471.html Update the program then run it.
