Hi :)
I'm sorry to trouble you all. I was wondering if you could help me figure out why I might be seeing a blue screen on my laptop. It is a small Acer Apire One laptop and it uses Windows Vista. I actually posted a few days ago but that post went unanswered. I'd love to hear any ideas. I can post an OTL log if that is needed.

Thanks in advance,
Mel

I apologise that your other post on this problem was overlooked.

For your future information when posting in the Malware forum please attach the OTL log as is requested in the guide to posting in that forum

Please DO NOT attach the OTL log here it is not used in this forum

Download this and click the analyse tab

http://www.resplendence.com/downloads
WHO CRASHED - free edition
Copy and paste the results please - that is the actual report of the crashes and the analysis, the preamble is not required.

If the BSOD will not allow you to download, then download to another computer and install on this one

Thanks so much for your prompt reply! :)
I'm not 100% sure if I'm pasting the right thing, but I hope so! Thank you for your help.
Here it is:

Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crash dumps are enabled but no valid crash dumps have been found. It may be that there are problems which prevent crash dumps from being written out. Check out the following article for possible causes: If crash dumps are not written out.

In case your computer does experience sudden reboots it is likely these are caused by malfunctioning hardware, power failure or a thermal issue. To troubleshoot a thermal issue, check the temperature using your BIOS setup program, check for dust in CPU and motherboard fans and if your computer is portable make sure it's located on a hard surface. Otherwise it's suggested you contact the support department of the manufacturer of your system or test your system with a memory test utility for further investigation.

1. You said it was Vista

and it uses Windows Vista

Windows 7 Service Pack 1, 6.1, build: 7601

2. Do you have the error shown on the BSOD

3.
How long have you had the problem

4. Does it Blue Screen on every boot or only occasionally

5. Are you able to identify any new program or a driver update prior to these blue screens

1) I'm sorry for my error. I am a computer novice at best, and I honestly didn't know whether it was 7 or Vista. I should have checked before writing that down.

2) I don't remember the error truthfully.

3) Problem started roughly 2 weeks ago.

4) It only happens sometimes.

5) No, none that I know of. Today when I restarted the computer..it was not a blue screen but a black screen saying "no cable connected. press any key to continue" (not exact words) and I would press a key and it would repeat that message again...(it kept doing it many times so I just pressed altCTRLdelete to force a restart)

I also saw a blue screen with white squished text that was unreadable. It disappeared quickly though.

I apologize for being so bad at describing my problems. I wish I knew more about computers! Sorry! Thank you so much for helping me in spite of my ignorance. I truly appreciate it.

Absolutely no need to apologise

The message no cable connected tends to suggest that it is trying to boot from network

Go to setup normally F2 but on first post screen it will tell you to enter setup press

As soon as that see that message keep tapping the key.

That should get you into the BIOS setup.

On there you will find the boot priority that is the order in which it checks devices listed in the boot priority order.

One of those may well be boot from network

Make the order the DVD drive, then the hard drive.

If the network boot is the first boot priority change that, normally by pressing enter when that entry is highlighted.

Having done that exit and save changes which is normally F10

It will tell you that in ther BIOS, on the right of the screen

DO NOT make any other changes

Now reboot the computer and as soon as the first post screen appears keep tapping F8 key

You should now be in the screen advanced boot options
On there select
Disable restart on failure.
The second image on this link will show you the screen you are looking for
http://www.sevenforu...ot-options.html

Now when it blue screens you will see the message and it will stay on the screen
Either type exacttly what you see having written it down
We do not need the introduction about
If this is the first time etc.

What we need is the error message eg
Page fault in non paged area or whatever it is
IRQL not less or equal
and the full set of numbers and letters on the stop error.

Now reboot and if it does blue screen get that message please for me and post it.
OR you may photograph it save it to the computer and attach it as an image
to do so on reply Use Full editor and attach following instructions.
If too large use your photo editing software or paint to reduce size.

On reboot go Windows button
Computer
right click the drive and click properties
click tools
On error checking click check now
Click to check the second entry, the first will already be checked - the second is scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
click start
agree to run on restart and so so

After it has completed go windows button
Control Panel
Administrative tools
event viewer
windows logs on left pane
application
when that loads in the main window click once on the source heading, that wil sort them in order
look at the wininit entries
find the one that relates to chkdsk that you have just run
on the right click copy details as text and attach by right click and paste to your reply

Here is how to do this - chkdsk
http://www.sevenforu...disk-check.html

and how to get the results
http://www.sevenforu...viewer-log.html

When you carried out the chkdsk go Windows button and in search type
cmd
when that appears above right click and click run as admin
at the cmd prompt
type
sfc /scannow
If it reports no violations you are done. If reports some errors could not be fixed run it again, up to three times.
and here is the guide to that
http://www.sevenforu...disk-check.html

Now go windows button
right click computer
click properties
click on left pane device manager
Are there any warnings of a red or yellow mark on any devices.
If so expand the entry by clicking on the + sign and then open by clicking the entry
Post details of the warning on the device.

I'm sorry for not replying earlier. I guess I overestimated my computer skills! I really don't understand the first step of the instructions even--sorry! :( I don't know when/where to press F2. Forgive me for being totally clueless!

No problem, immediately you see the first screen it will actually usually say to enter setup F2 or it may be another key
You then simply keep tapping that key

If you cannot do that try the next one on the F8 key

Tried what the enter setup

does it not tell you on the post screen to enter setup press -
Try this

press and hold f2 as soon as you press the power button and it will say please wait, and take u to the BIOS...

If it does not and you cannot get there by tapping that or it may be delete the havde you tried the rest of my offerings

Now reboot the computer and as soon as the first post screen appears keep tapping F8 key

and onwards from there
