I clicked on a link to a USAToday Blog page and got a pop up from Norton that a Trojan had been blocked. This was a couple of days ago and Norton is still blocking Trojan.Zeroaccess, Trojan.gen & Backdoor.Trojan. Poor judgement caused me to go to another forum for help. I had used the geekstogo site a few years ago with great results and wished I would have started here.
I don't know anything about these tools. I was told to run systemlook and then combofix. Combofix did not produce a log so I waited for instructions which were not clear and I thought I was supposed to run combofix again which I did. The person helping me then became rude. I still have systemlook and combofix on my computer. If someone would consider helping me I would really appreciate it. My computer seems to be running ok, maybe a little slow.
I ran OTL and it also generated a Extras.Txt log. Should I post it? Thank you for any help or advice.

Hi there lets see if I can make you happy

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot


Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Now that looks good so lets run a final sweep for orphans

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

No objects detected! Thank you so much. I do have a couple of questions.
Combofix deleted this file 'c:\users\xps laptop\Documents\Family Finder D.DUP', was there something wrong with it? I wasn't sure about the D.DUP. I have several Family Finder files from my genetic genealogy addiction.
I use the free version of Malwarebytes. I had read Malwarebytes Pro is not compatible with Norton Security and I use Norton since I have Comcast. Would it be better to run a different AV & purchase MBAM Pro? There are a few other pc's in the house that I have to keep clean.

Would it be better to run a different AV & purchase MBAM Pro? There are a few other pc's in the house that I have to keep clean.

It depends really, did you pay for the AV or is it free ? If free and you have several computers then you could try some of the free ones to see which is best for you. I can list three free ones for you if you wish

Combofix deleted this file 'c:\users\xps laptop\Documents\Family Finder D.DUP', was there something wrong with it? I wasn't sure about the D.DUP. I have several Family Finder files from my genetic genealogy addiction.

The file type is an unknown one which is why Combofix killed it. Has it affected the programme in any way ?

How is the computer behaving now ? Any problems or weirdness

The computer is running great, very fast. I've been using it a couple of hours and haven't noticed any problems or weirdness. All the thumbnails in my picture folder have a green box with a check mark but they open fine.

Yes, please recommend good AV programs. I am running the free Norton that comes with Comcast but I don't mind purchasing one. I would like to avoid these stressful problems if possible.

OK Three free Antivirus Programmes, try each one and see which you feel most comfortable with... But only have one installed at any one time

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :thumbsup:

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix

  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the "x" and "/") then click OK

  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Go to control panel
  • Select folder options (Appearance > Folder options in category view)
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

Upgrading Java:
  • Go to this site and click Do I have Java
  • It will check your current version and then offer to update to the latest version

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point
  • Go to Control Panel and select System
  • Select System
  • On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
  • Select System Protection Tab
  • Select Create at the bottom
  • Type in a name i.e. Clean
  • Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones
  • GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
  • Right click Disc cleanup and select run as administrator
  • Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
  • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
  • Select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
  • Select Delete on the pop up
  • Select OK
  • Select Delete

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

I'm sorry for the late reply and I'm afraid I messed things up. I should have waited for the house to get quiet. When I went to remove combofix, I typed unistall and left out the 2nd n. It ran, rebooted, and printed a log. That's when I saw my error. I'm really sorry. I haven't done anything else. I am so embarressed :blush:

Thank you for your kind reply. I finally finished your instructions and everything ran fine. All your tools were removed from my desktop and the computer seems to be running great. I updated java and removed the older versions. I really appreciate your time, patience, & detailed instructions. I will post back if I notice anything in the next couple of days. :thumbsup:
