Hi. :)

I am on a neighbor's computer. When I tried to access the GTG site, one time I got a "database connection error" and the other times I got "SQL error or driver server error" and "There appears to be a problem with our database."

Remembering when the GTG database was down around July 4, I came to this computer, thinking I would probably get the same database error window.

I will go back to my computer and let you know if I can access the GTG site. I have had no problems going to other websites. I wanted to be sure you heard from me, though, because I had to let more time than usual go by before I was free to do the steps you requested and send a report, and I didn't want the topic to close.

There have a been a few forum server issues of late, so the root cause is not your machine. Not to worry I been taking this into consideration and would not close the topic as inactive because of that.

.I am using an adapter, not a router.

Do you mean a type of say WiFI Adapter? If so what is the source for the Internet Connection in your home that your machine actually connects to via the aforementioned, a shared connection in say a apartment block for example?

I successfully put my computer in Safe Mode, but when I tried to run the Microsoft Fixit.exe I got "system administrator has set policies to prevent installation of MF," a remnant from when the computer was owned by the school system. So I returned my computer to regular "Start Windows Normally" mode.

Aye that will be related to the Faronics Deep Freeze. Not a lot can be done without the password for the application so the uninstaller can be ran that resides in the Faronics folder. As further research reveals if we attempt to remove the software by other means a very distinct chance your machine would be left in a unbootable state. The only feasible way around this would be as I mentioned last time ask about the password at the point of purchase and or you could purchase a XP Installation CD-ROM then start over with a actual a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows Operating System.

So it appears not a lot we can do about the faulting Internet Explorer issue, though we could check if it can be uninstalled then downloaded/re-installed etc. However we will leave this for now since you primarily use FireFox.

Something odd happened with the computer last night which I never encountered before. I copied most of what I saw b/c I thought it might be related to the malware. As soon as I logged on a full page screen appeared saying "Windows has been shut down to minimize danger to your computer"

Most likely relates to the attempted use of the Microsoft FixIt, though feasible could be due to what I mentioned prior in post #53. So you may have to seek assistance with the IT Tech Staff here in GTG about that.

This evening as my home page was loading, I saw the waiting for ieonline/ieslice again and something I had not seen before;

www.microsoft.com redir.dll.asapi something something...hotmail It may have been atapi instead of asapi and atapi was part of the page I described in the reply I sent you earlier today, the page about Windows shutting down the system.

I'm sure it ended in hotmail and I have never used that email service.

Yahoo mail was the first URL I clicked to go to and I got the Firefox can't find the server screen, yet the connection was strong.

Acknowledged. The next course of action will be in the following post...

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

Click on Start >> Run...(or the Windows key and R together) to bring up the Run box and and copy and paste in:

"C:\Program Files\ERUNT\ERUNT.EXE" %SystemRoot%\ERDNT\adwc-backup
and click on OK.

Re-scan with AdwCleaner:

  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to launch the application.
  • Now click on the Delete tab.
  • Please post the contents of the logfile created in your next post.
Note: The log can also be located at C: >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <-- denotes the number of times the application has been ran, so in this case may be something like R2.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Answer to my adapter query.
  • New AdwCleaner Log.

Hi. :)

My computer is fast with only occasional "Firefox can't find server" to some site as obvious such as Yahoo.

OK, the latter may relate to the below you mentioned...

Yes, a shared connection. The adapter is Netgear Wireless USB Adapter.

So I think we will check this out, as feasible a ISP issue apart from say malware related etc.

Public schools are generally still out for the summer, but I will see if I can find someone at the school system who would be able to provide the password.

Fair play, should have thought of that as the same in my locale also.

Thanks for your help

You're welcome!

Hi. :)

All appears fine from a anti-malware point of view and providing no other issues merely carry out the below and you should be good to go as they say.

Uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Now type in ComboFix /Uninstall into the and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
  • Posted Image
Clean up with OTL:

  • Double-click on OTL to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot.
  • On the OTL main screen, depress the CleanUp button.
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
The above process should clean up and remove the vast majority of scanners used and logs created etc.

Any left over merely delete yourself and empty the Recycle Bin.
