None of the icons on the desktop will open any of the applications. Going through Start>All Programs won't start the programs either. The icons that are usually on the task bar are missing as well.

I was trying out a program to let me move songs from my Ipod to my PC. I can't remember what the name of the program was.

I copied OTL to a flash drive and ran it on the infected computer. I have tried to copy the notepad text to the flash drive to bring it to the computer I am using here (a MacBook) but when I try to Save As, I get an error message that says "Common Dialog error (0x3002).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have also run a full scan with avast! and it didn't find anything.

Hello highland403 and welcome to my office here at G2G! :)

My nick is maliprog and I'll be your technical support on this issue. Before we start please read my notes carefully:

NOTES:
  • Malware removal is NOT instantaneous, most infections require several courses of action to completely eradicate.
  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Kindly follow my instructions in the order posted. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans or fix on your own without my direction.
  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described.
  • If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste it to include the log in your reply.
  • You must reply within 3 days or your topic will be closed

Step 1

Download Unhide.exe from here to your desktop and run ti. It should unhide all your files.

Step 2

There should be OTL.txt and Extras.txt log already saved in the same folder from where you run OTL.exe. Post it here for me please or attach them if you can't post.

Step 3

Please don't forget to include these items in your reply:

  • OTL log
  • OTL Extras log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post using "Add Reply" button

Hi maliprog. It's great to hear from you!

While waiting for you, I discovered that I can open programs by going to their .exe file in Explore. Internet Explorer won't open, but Firefox does, so I downloaded unhide using Firefox. When I downloaded unhide, it went to a download folder, not the desktop. So I dragged it to the desktop and tried running it.

When I try to run unhide I get the following error message

Windows-No Disk
Exception Processing Message C0000013 Parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c

Can you post OTL logs for me.

After that try to run UnHide from safe mode:

  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Did you get any of your icons back after you run unhide?

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

No, I did not get any of my icons back after running Unhide.

When going through the setup process, I encountered this error message: "CoCreateInstance failed; code 0x80040154, class not registered." This popped up right after Malwarebytes asked me if I wanted to create a desktop shortcut, which I clicked Yes to.

I think that icons are lost and we can try to restore them manually later. These errors looks like system problem. We will try to solve that first.

Step 1

We are going to run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the program, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:
  • My Computer
  • Tools
  • Folder Options
  • View
  • "Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan. If this still asks you to put in your windows XP CD, and you do not have the CD (If you bought it preinstalled) post back for more tips, otherwise enter Windows CD.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:
  • My Computer
  • Tools
  • Folder Options
  • View
  • "Check" Hide protected operating system files.

Step 2

  • Go to Start -> My Computer
  • Right click on C: disk and clik on Properties
  • Click on tab Tools and click on Check now... button
  • Check Automatically fix system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
  • Click Start button
  • Confirm schedule disk check next time computer starts with Yes button
  • Restart your system and wait while system checks your disk for errors
Step 3

Let me know how is your system after running this steps (beside you don't have icons).

There was no change after running Step 1.

I couldn't update windows because IE 8 won't run.

After Step 2, I can't tell any difference in the way it runs.

I can open programs if I go through Explorer and find the .exe file. Except Internet Explorer 8 just appears to be opening and then disappears after about 2-3 seconds.

OK. Let's try these two steps.

Step 1

We need to disable malware processes on your system first
  • Download TheKiller to your Desktop
  • Note that TheKiller is renamed as explorer.exe
  • Run it by double click (If running Vista or Windows 7, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Press OK button after program finish
  • Do not restart your system after this step
NOTE: If malware blocks TheKiller from running please try to run it several more times

Try to run your programs now by double click on them.

Step 2

I'll check this later. For now let's try this tool

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install the programme then run

Go directly to Start Repairs tab and click Start button

Confirm that you want to do new restore point and registry backup.

Leave the preselected items ticked and press Start

Step 3

Any changes after these two steps?

The Killer fixed all of the shortcuts except for shortcuts having to do with Microsoft office or Internet Explorer.

Step 2 seems to have fixed everything else. As far as I can tell, all of the shortcuts now work. The only thing that didn't come back are the shortcuts on the task bar.

You can restore Office shortcuts like this:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
2. In Add or Remove Programs, click Microsoft Office 2010, and then click Change.
3. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Continue.
4. Click Microsoft Office, and then click Continue.
5. When the update is complete, click OK, and then close Add or Remove Programs.

The Microsoft Office folder should now be showing in your start menu.

To restore shortcuts to task bar you need to drag-and-drop shortcuts manually. There is no other way.

After all these do you have any other problems? If not I'll prepare some cleanup for your PC.

OK. I will drag icons I need to the task bar.

Can you tell me how to put an an icon on the task bar that shows the desktop?

The only other thing is IE 8 runs with the add-ons disabled. Do I need to enable them? If so, how do I do that?

After these two things, I am ready for the cleanup you mentioned.
