Is this before or after you did (or tried to do) what I suggested?

so it's not safe mode at all...you are hung up....

reboot.

tap f8 key while counting memory

when the boot menu appears, choose safe mode

Once again, I am having a hard time following you.

So, you edited the registry and then rebooted and now you're stuck??

tapping the f8 key, as the memory counts up, once a second. you should get to a menu--one option is LAST KNOW CONFIGURATION.

choose that.

crap

this is why I said this was FRAUGHT with danger, and asked you to ASK questions.

Editing the registry is dangerous.

without seeing what is going on, it is difficult to suggest where to go now.

Do you have your windows xp cd?

I'm not saying you did do anything wrong...I am saying that that edit is not guaranteed to work because what happened to you is not supposed to happen (your system drive switched letters).

I have seen other drives randomly switch, but never the system drive.

At this point, I would run a system repair--which was the only other option before we tried the registry trick, which MIGHT have worked but it was pretty much 50-50. I'd pay good money to know what caused that (again, since a user cannot change it normally I know you did nothing to cause it, something very, very, odd happened).

That was an extraordinary problem, since nothing other than partition magic alters the drive letters like that that I have seen. Running a repair should put you back in business with the c: as the local drive.

Here is a good guide.

It will look very much like an install--don't freak, but it will maintain your data and your programs.

You will, however, need to visit windows update immediately.
