Hi again

I have an Acer Extensa 5610 running XP which has been working slowly for some time with lots of gliches. I have now bought another laptop and want to give the Acer to my daughter. I want to wipe it completely clean and reinstall Microsoft Office as I have a spare licence. I don't have the original discs for the operating system. I am hoping this will stop all the issues it had in the past. What is the best way forward with this?

Give this a try and let me know if it works. There may be a factory recovery partition on the hard drive you can access by following the next set of instructions.

Acer:
Hard Disk Recovery
should be enabled by default. If it is not, you may need to go into your systems BIOS by hitting F2 at boot and enable it under the Advanced tab.

Once Hard Disk Recovery is enabled, restart the system and hit ALT+F10. This will begin the system recovery process. You will be prompted to type six zeros as a security step. Type 000000 to proceed.

I hit F2 but there is no 'Advanced' tab. Under 'Main' there is 'D2D Recovery [Enabled]' that i assume is the what we are looking for?

Restarted and hit F10. gave me an option for recovery which I chose. Then got blue screen 'problem detected' etc

Is that all it said is problem detected?
Normally it would give a lot more info then that.

A problem been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent further damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps;

Check for viruses on you computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers.
Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

The above message is exactly what was displayed on the blue screen after I hit F10 on restart. Appreciate your help, THANKS!

0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
Windows lost access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process. Typical causes: Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading storage adapter hardware, or a virus.


First we need to check and see if the hard drive has errors but since you have no access we will have to do this another way. You will need to borrow a XP installation cd that matches the installed OS. Home, Media or Pro and the correct SP that is installed 1,2 or 3.





How to run checkdisk from recovery console (Windows xp). (Courtesy dsenette)
  • Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
    Note:Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
  • When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
    Note:If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
  • When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  • At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following then press Enter:

    chkdsk /r

  • Allow this to run UNDISTURBED until completed (45 min or so)
  • Report any errors

if you can't locate a disk...

Please download ARCDC from Artellos.com.
  • Double click ARCDC.exe
  • Follow the dialog until you see 6 options. pick the version and service pack option that corresponds to your system
  • You will be prompted with a Terms of Use by Microsoft, please accept.
  • You will see a few dos screens flash by, this is normal.
  • Next you will be able to choose to add extra files. Select the Default Files.
  • The last window will allow you to burn the disk using BurnCDCC
Your ISO is located on your desktop.

make sure in the bios the cd drive is the first boot device....put the cd in the cd drive..boot your computer....when you get to the screen that gives you the option to install or repair ...select r

when you get to the command prompt
type in chkdsk /r press enter
note the single space before the /

Thanks Happy I didn't have the ARCDC instructions so you saved the day on that. I now have it for the future.
Sam the instructions Happyrock posted will work if you don't have the OS disk.
