hi all,

i have suddenly found that Word won't print any document, saved or new...

but i can print an image from a file using Windows printing wizard with no problems...

i have reinstalled the printer drivers as asked and have the windows test page stating success in loading new printer, and still i am prompted to check connections, reload driver etc when trying to print from Word...

there is obviously a simple answer here but i can't see the forest for the trees...

cheers, ksoup

another thing, when i open a document with Word, all that comes up are the background and bars.

to open the doc i have to use the folder tab

on closing, the doc disappears but the background (only) remains

and remains and remains...when i click close, the screen flickers

and after a bit more time, the message 'is taking longer than expected,

continue yes no?' appears...click no and it shuts down.

happens every time...

thanks

This may prove a little difficult.

I would start with a checkdisk using the /r, so that is either
cmd prompt and then type
chkdsk C: /r

or My Computer
right click the HDD
Clcik properties
click tools,
click error checking,
click check now
click to check the second box, so that both are checked eg file errors and recovery of bad sectors
click start
agree to run on restart and then either watch results or obtain from event viewer

I would the follow that with a system file check
that is start
run
type
sfc /scannow

It may ask for the XP CD

This is I think the problem

and you may wish to wrk through the offered solutions

the chkdsk C: /r came back clean

the sfc /scannow kept requesting i use the XP CD which was loaded...

on a different tangent, could this have been caused by tune up utilities?

this issue started the day after i downloaded and used?

thanks

Unfortunately VERY easily

The only place, in my opinion for such utlities as Tune Ups, registry cleaners, system boosters etc, is LEFT where they were.
There has NOT yet been ONE written that can be guaranteed to work safely on 100% of computers 100% of the time.

They are gimmicks and should not be installed.
Their most dangerous aspect is the so called registry cleaners, optimizers etc.

You have I think two possible courses to follow
One is to see if you have a restore point dated BEFORE the use of Tune UP
the other is to explore the link I sent you.

It is really easier for you to follow that procedure, than it is for me to type it out here, as I would only type what was in the link.

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET that if you use system restore, you will LOSE all changes since that date, so back up any important docs, images etc and then visit Windows Updates.

hi,
i have been trying the suggestions on the link but no success...

yes, i have the office CDs and today removed office, restarted and installed both discs again...

in the start up when told new programs had been installed, all functions of office were listed as new except Word and Excel...and they still won't print.

i have searched for and removed all traces of tune up program, just in case there were any residual side-effects

i have removed and reload the printer again, just to make sure.

thanks

Did you try this one please

There is a damaged entry in the Windows registry.
To reset the registry, set another printer as the default, and then set your original printer as the default.

If you don't already have another printer set up on this computer, follow these steps:
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  • Double-click Add Printer.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Local Printer or Network Printer, and then click Next.
  • In the Manufacturers list, click Generic.
  • In the Make/Model or Printers list, click Generic / Text Only, and then click Next.
  • Click the LPT1 port, and then click Next.
  • Click Next again, and then click Finish.
Then switch the default printer to the new driver and back. To do this, follow these steps:
  • In the Printers window, right-click the Generic / Text Only printer (or your other existing printer), and then click Set as Default.
  • Right-click your original printer, and click Set as Default.
  • Try printing again.
Also please post the make and model of printer

hi,

yes, have tried that...i did it twice just to make sure i had done it right

the printer is HP Photosmart C4280

it has a usb connection, which the printer wizard advised itself as not necessary to use with,

it registers automatically with windows

however, if i follow the wizard, on the page where you can choose the local printer
there is a box to check if you want windows to locate a plug n play printer connected to the network
and if you select this box, it declares no plug and play printers are connected...

also, the HP solutions center won't register any recognized HP printer either, but it hasn't done that for ages
and it has run thru windows ok till now

thanks

I appreciate that it says Micorosoft word 2007
but I think it is worth trying
Critical Update: Cannot find scanned image or document files after scanning completes. ►2011-02-19 , Version:3.0, 28.47MWhen scanning after installing or upgrading to HP Solution Center 13, scanning appears to complete correctly, however scanned images or documents cannot be found on the computer.

More infoHP Print Driver Update ►2009-05-27 , Version:1.0, 15.78MThis Print Driver Update contains improvements for issues related to the following applications and/or print functionality: Microsoft Office 2007 Duplex printing via network Printing from Intuit ...

and you may find that the HP tools listed here may provide a more meaningful diagnosis
http://h10025.www1.h...ct=3192753#N263

I would also be tempted to try another usb port, especially if you have it connected to a usb hub, I would connect direct to the usb ports on the rear of the computer

I do not quite understand this

it has a usb connection, which the printer wizard advised itself as not necessary to use with,

Clearly as you will also have concluded it is some other program, utility or file system error that has changed some setting.
