I have recently bought a new battery for my Dell Inspiron 1440 and it is compatible with the laptop. I knew I needed a new battery because notifications constantly told me I need to replace the battery, and since my charger was not charging the old battery I thought it was the battery that was faulty. However, now with the new battery at (27%), the ac adapter is not charging. The words "plugged in, not charging" show up next to the battery symbol on the laptop. I have tried my brother's charger, it said "plugged in, not charging" also but that was an HP adapter, which is weird since it perfectly fit into the laptop. What should I do now?

Hi,

Check if the tips on this article Solution for Laptop Battery not charging when plugged in.

Also make sure if you use another charger that it have the same output values for voltage and amperage (this could be higher).

:welcome: PujaRC

You say that the replacement battery is compatible but I am afraid that it is well documented that Dell notebooks (and many other brand names) do not like and indeed will not function correctly or if at all with third party - non propriety hardware which includes replacement batteries and AC adapters, see http://nctritech.wor...vendor-lock-in/

Return the replacement battery and obtain a genuine Dell replacement as this is the only way you can rule out the battery as the cause.

The battery is not the problem. I'm sure it's the charger because on the bios screen it says "Adapter = Unknown" when, in fact, it is the original adapter.

If that is the case purchase a genuine Dell AC adapter, good luck and let us know how it goes.
