Edit remark.
After 3 iterations of following the general guideline, apparently the problem is gone.
Great relief - at least temporarily :tazz:

Hi,
Yes - another guy with Aurora problems.
One of the most stubborn and annoying pieces of malware I have ever encountered.
Tried to clean out my system following your "before posting HJT-log instructions", but aurora-related REG entries keep reappearing, when I run latest version of AdAware.

Are you able to help me with this menace?

My HJT log is as follows:

Hi Thomas2E,

Looks like you did a great job of cleaning up!

Just a few more things.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

4. Open HiJack and do a scan.

5. Put a Check next to the following items:

O9 - Extra button: Ebates - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Programmer\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)

Optional
ViewMgr.exe is an advertising program by Viewpoint. This process monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author's.

O2 - BHO: Viewpoint Toolbar BHO - {A7327C09-B521-4EDB-8509-7D2660C9EC98} - C:\Programmer\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBarBHO.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Programmer\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Programmer\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Programmer\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML

6. click the Fix Checked box

7. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

8. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker
Viewpoint Manager <------Optional, see above

9. Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Programmer\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker
C:\Programmer\Viewpoint <------Optional, see above

10. Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

11. Reboot in normal mode and Please post an Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log to verify all is good. Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Hi ExCal,

I just went thru your instructions. HJT Fix Checked worked fine as far as I can tell. I was able to remove Viewpoint under Add/Remove Programs and after that the empty program-folder in Explorer.
E-bates did not show up in Add/Remove Programs and I found no program-folder either.

HJT log:

Hi Thomas2E,

I hope its for pleasure that your going out of town and not buisness!

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if the main link does not work) and install it. Please Do not run yet.

Also update Ewido if you haven't already done so :tazz:

Just a few random bad files to clean up.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\satmat.ini
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot. Reboot in safe mode.

C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools\WinRatchet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\alchem.ini
C:\WINDOWS\INF\alchem.inf
C:\WINDOWS\yqzmiiy.exe

When you get into safe mode:

Run the program CleanUp!

Open up Ewido and do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Post back when you finish and tell me how your computer is running ;)

Hi ExCal,

Well, I was in fact away on business, but not a bad week at all.

I went thru your last few pieces of advice, and they worked like a charm. My PC is running beautifully and I've had no instances of pop-up of any kind since the clean-up. ;)

A friend recommended me to give the Microsoft Antispyware a go on my PC, which I did. It picked up a few more unwelcome visitors (WindUpdates and Blazefind) which I hadn't noticed before. Other than that the scan was clean.

All in all, I think my PC is just about as clean as it is possible in this connected environment.

Thanks again for all your help. It has been very valuable. Some goes to the entire forum. :tazz:

Glad to hear that your computer is better now ;)

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE

Spybot S&D

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4

Spywareguard

IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 2 good free versions:

Sygate

ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox

Opera

This site is a great source for tightening up security on Internet Explorer settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.
