I inadvertently installed and executed VCodec 1.47 (a known Trojan horse installer) on my Win 2K system.

I ran most of the recommended AV and spyware removal programs, and cleaned up a lot but the system still seems to boot more slowly than usual. Still Internet Explorer no longer seems to be trying to call an unrecognized site dumpserv.com (which I blocked anyway through a firewall rule), so that's progress. Still To be sure I thought I'd post the HiJack log and see if someone can find anything nasty. Thanks...

Welcome to GTG.

I want you to go to your Add/Remove panel and see if you can find any of these:

Security iGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

If you can, tell me since this is another trojan that we need to remove. Also see if you can change your desktop wallpaper.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegSvr32] C:\WINNT\system32\msmsgs.exe
O16 - DPF: PlaceWare Console: PWS-CC2K-4-0-2-1-2-k4r1l0 - http://mka.ops.place...lib/cc-full.cab
O16 - DPF: {072D3F2E-5FB6-11D3-B461-00C04FA35A21} (CFForm Runtime) - http://www.bulletinb...sses/CFJava.cab

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINNT\system32\msmsgs.exe

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. Once it's done, you may click the Close button. When asked if you want to logoff, choose Yes.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

OK, thanks and I did as you asked, and the new log is below. Did not see Security iGuard, Virt Maid or Search Maid, and I have no problem changing desktop wallpaper. The only real symptom I'm still seeing is a longer (2-3 minutes) bootup process than usual. That longer bootup time didn't change after executing your instructions. Whether it's occurring as a result of a Trojan H or some other problem, I don't know. Mainly, I just want to verify that the Trojan H is gone (if it ever was in there).

The trojan should be gone. Did TrendMicro find anything?

One reason why it's slow could be because you have two antivirus programs. Decide whether to keep AVG or Norton and uninstall the other. I recommend using AVG over Norton, but that's your choice.

Then check and fix these in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CreateCD50] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\CreateCD\CreateCD50.exe" -r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Adaptec\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Eraser] C:\Program Files\Eraser\eraser.exe -hide
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Acrobat Assistant.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Distillr\AcroTray.exe

Restart. Any speed improvement?

Your log is clean.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

TrendMicro found another Trojan_Small_Hx in Notepad which I got rid of.

However, I did all the other things you suggested and the boot time didn't change. But at least the trojan seems to be gone and I can live with the slower boot time. Thanks for all your help.
