Open autoruns and un-tick the item below.

+ "cpudrv" "" "" "c:\program files\systemrequirementslab\cpudrv.sys"

Use Drivermax and see if there is an update for your Audio driver install it reboot and test the machine for a bit let me know the out come.

Thank you, rockmilk, done all. I delayed it until now coz was waiting for another bsod, which happened today. I noticed that it tends to happen when pc is used for several things at the same time, especially if one of them is video or audio.

DriverMax came up with a list of drivers, one was for RtkHDAud so updated it as you suggested.
I don't know if I should update any other drivers on the list?
They were:
Intel® 82945G Express Chipset Family
Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC
Intel® 82801 PCI Bridge - 244E
Intel® 82801G (ICH7 Family) SMBus Controller - 27DA
Intel® 945G/GZ/GC/P/PL Processor to I/O Controller - 2770
Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio
Intel® 82801G (ICH7 Family)Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF
Intel® 82801G (ICH7 Family)USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 27CC
USB Mass Storage Device
Generic USB Hub

I'm thinking maybe this Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio would be needed too, or not? Your advice would be much appreciated.
Gonna use pc as normal, including playing video, and see. I hope I won't have to post again in a few minutes

Ok let us know I am wondering if creating a new admin profile and moving your files over might help in this situation as well.

Sorry for the delay in replying, had to wait 24h to get the last driver (DriverMax limits to 2 drivers per day for free users). And there was a bit of a problem with that driver, I'm talking of Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio.
See the enclosed screenshot. DriverMax found something called 3DP Edition v.9.12 (SigmaTel C-Major Audio) as a bus driver for HD Audio. I duly installed it and it screwed up the sound (no sound in audio/video files), motherboard blips appearing during some clicks within a browser. Luckily DriverMax prompts to create restore points before every install, so restored pc to the state before.
Due to all that, my HD Audio bus driver remains not updated. The other one of the last two you suggested, Intel® 82801G (ICH7 Family) SMBus Controller - 27DA, updated with no problems.
No bsods since the last one, but must admit I try not to push the system too much, i.e don't play video/audio when a browser with many tabs open hogs the memory, etc.
Could I get a reliable bus driver anywhere else?

Re. creating a new admin account, sure, I could try that if you think it may help, i.e the problem may be at a an account-level rather than the system-level.

Lets start to look at the ram do you have more than one stick installed if so test the machine and stress it with only one stick installed.

If crash test other stick and so on.

Report any issues.

I can do that, but I did that before, exactly as you suggested. I used memtest software to run tests which came clean.
