Okay here is the problem:
-I put my computer on sleep mode as I will return in a few hours.
-I come back, it is on and seems to have completely restarted for no reason.
-I log in, a bubble pops up that says 'Windows has failed to update'.
-Clicking the bubble takes me to the update panel, which has an option to install some updates, which also fails.

Basically, my computer restarts when I don't want it to and windows can't update.

Hi Progammer101,

If Install Updates Automatically is scheduled Windows will do just that, which is sounds like it did, no matter what mode you have it in.

Try rebooting normally and then try to access Windows Updates again.

If that doesn't work, download the System Update Readiness Tool from HERE.

To find the correct download for your system, please scroll down past Resolution to find the download just under where it states Method 2 and choose the one for your system from the list.

If you're not quite sure which one to choose:

For Win7 32-bit choose --> All supported x86-based versions of Windows 7

For Win7 64-bit choose --> All supported x64-based versions of Windows 7

Once the task is complete, please try updates again.

Keep me informed to your progress.

Donna :)

Hi.
I am running 64 bit windows 7.
I used the tool and it seems that it stops working here.

I just noticed that now sometimes Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) stops working for no apparent reason.

Hello Programmer101,

It is normal for the SURT to appear to hang, as you found out, you just have to leave it to chug away for however long it takes. The duration of the installation depends on the scale of the problem on your computer, so if it's taking more than a few hours you should be worried!

Could you post the log from the SURT please? It's located here:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

That's good, no errors there. I don't know why yours took half an hour to run though! Could you zip up and upload your CBS folder for me please?

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

Also, what error codes are you getting when the updates fail?

Hi Programmer101,

I'm still here. Tom and I have been discussing this issue in private. Please allow me to guide you while he is away from his desk.

See if you can right click on the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder and choose Copy, then Paste to your desktop. Next, right click the folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, then attach it to your next post.

Here's how to attach if you're not sure:

  • Below Fast Reply box click on Use Full Editor button.
  • Scroll down and click on Browse button.
  • Click on Desktop found in left pane.
  • Scroll to find the image saved to Desktop and click on the image.
  • Click the Open button.
  • Click the Attach This File button.
  • Click Add Reply button once you have completed your post and are ready to submit.

Let me know if you have issues. If a Window pops up (can't recall what it will say exactly) just click Continue and the file should appear as a zipped folder on your desktop.

I can't see any obvious errors in any of your previous CBS logs :(

What error code is Windows Update giving you when it fails?

Hi Programmer101,

Could you view your installed updates:

http://windows.micro...s-are-installed

Then tell me which ones are failing. You could do a screenshot if it's easier?
