162 error

I am trying to use a brand new from the box (although 13 years old) compaq5280 desktop. I kept getting a 162 error, so I had someone change out the CMOS battery. Finally made it thru set up, put in windows 98 key, but got stuck because the keyboard wasn't working properly (was swapping letters, etc). then got stuck because keyboard wan't working. Had to restart comp. After restart, back at square 1 with 162 error. WHat to do now?
