My grandfather just bought an ASUS notebook pc x401a series with Windows 8. He did a basic setup because he had not yet installed his wireless. However, he is up in age and forgot his password (did not write it down). Now he is trying to log in but of course it's locked. He thinks he remembers his microsoft account id but when he tries to reset his password on the microsoft website through another computer, they keep telling him it's not his password and they can't recognize his account. How can we either recover the password or restore, (recover?) the OS system to factory settings? We called microsoft and they told us they could not break passwords. Thank you so much for you help!

BIOS or Operating System's passwords are there for the purpose related to Security and Privacy to protect the legitimate owner of a machine. While there are many locations on the Internet that might help you learn about managing passwords for a machine's BIOS or Operating System, we a G2G do not assist in what amounts to hacking past a machine's Security and Privacy safeguards.

While such requests are often legitimate, and come from users who experience exactly the kind of problem that you post, we have no way of determining legitimate vs. not legitimate, therefore we do not respond to such requests.

If you have the original OS disk, you can re-install the operating system.

I totally understand. My next question is this, the laptop did not come with a recovery disk. Do I just ask ASUS to send me one or where would I get one?

You can ask them. Often the first thing that you are supposed to do is to create a recovery disk, which most people don't seem to do.

On some of their systems, the ASUS web site says that you can press the F9 key to restore the system. I am not sure of all the details. The documentation that came with the computer might give more information.

Read here, maybe you can do this: If I can't enter the system, how can I restore the Windows 8 laptop or PC to factory default settings?
