MSFT Publisher Hangs in New menu

I have a new Win8 Dell with MSFT Office 2010. When I open Publisher from a exe shortcut it hangs for several minutes to get past the splash screen. If I open publisher from a .pub file, it opens normally, but the File > New menu then hangs for several minutes.

I've posted this on the Microsoft Technet forums and they have been spectacularly unhelpful. When this started, it would take about 10 minutes for publisher to open. Someone on that forum told me to check into the normal.pub file. I did, there wasn't one anywhere. So I created a normal.pub file and I'm left with a somewhat shorter hang on open.

I would very much appreciate any help.
