After a reboot I was able to uninstall Total Defense Anti-Virus, which incidentally is a well-known product that is sold in many retail stores and is a legitimate piece of software.

I have about 30-45 seconds after each reboot to try a step in your list of things to do.

Interesting.. it said "You do not have sufficient access to uninstall Java™ 6 Update 17. Please contact your system administrator."

OK I was finally able to uninstall the Java stuff using the Microsoft Fixit Tool. I also installed avast, ran Chkdsk (it succeeded this time where before it kept failing). Chkdsk found and replaced some bad sectors. Ran sfc and that found no integrity issues. Below are the System and Application logs from Event Viewer and the Process Explorer text file. The formatting for the Process Explorer file was not right.

FYI: Those logs were all compiled while running in Normal Mode, but with all but the Microsoft services still disabled from when I adjusted the configuration using msconfig before. If you need me to try to get those logs again with the services enabled again, say so and I will try. I just might have a difficult time knowing which ones I need to enable again.
