I have two questions.
What the document made in, for example MS Office Word?
How many friends do you want to distribute it to?

I would actually pay for the copyright or try to get it published which should get you through the process of protecting your own work. These might help:
Copyright:
Copyrighted work can only be used without permission when someone is criticizing it, commenting on it, reporting on it, teaching about it, or conducting research. Thumbnails aren't always fair use, however. They're only fair use if the necessary portion of the work is copied and nothing more. See: http://www.linkedin....=1TW-osrh5XFl81

Right now the document is in MS Word and I'd like to share it with about a dozen people (all researchers).

Do you have any way of sending an encrypted file? If not I would look into that. That way they need a password just to open it.
