I need some serious help with my computer. It's about to take flight thru the nearest window. If I have posted this in the incorrect forum, my apologies, please move it to the correct area.

The cpu in my computer is always running at 98-100% usage. I've been through glomo's tutorial on things to fix, turned off everything I think I can with no change.

The machine is an HPp6203w, AMD Athalon II X2 215 processor 2.70 GHz with 4 gigs of memory, 64 bit Windows 7. The pagefile is 7000mg. The c drive is 450 gigs and half full.

Here is the list of processes running:

Get Process Explorer

http://live.sysinter...com/procexp.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a minute then:

File, Save As, Save. Open the file Procexp.txt on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Nice tool have! Thanks for the info on that one, I haven't used it before.

I noticed that the Windows Search Indexer keep turning itself back on after I kill the process. Do you knnow what it's called in the Services? Is it the "Windows Search" service?

Thanks, Lori

Windows Search is correct tho the official way to turn it off is here:
http://www.howtogeek...h-in-windows-7/

Looking at your log I think we have a bad program or driver.

Interrupts 5.12 is way too high. It should be around 1.00 or even lower. This seems to have a big effect on speed more that its numbers would make you think.

On a normal PC we would expect to see this at 90% or better:

System Idle Process 11.24

procexp64.exe 30.97 should be around 5. Sometimes if you don't wait the minute for things to settle down you will see this

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button) Download, Save and Install it. Run Speccy. When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving), File, Save as Text File, (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK. Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System. (It will be near the top about 10 lines down.) Attach the file to your next post.

Once you have created the log you can uninstall Speccy so it doesn't run in the background.

Now let's see if it's a bad program causing the problem.

Go into msconfig

http://www.netsquirr...onfig_win7.html

Under the Startup tab uncheck everything then switch to the Services tab and uncheck everything too. Hit Apply then reboot. Minimize msconfig when it comes up. Run Process Explorer as before and post the new log. Then go back into msconfig and tell it to do a normal startup. Apply but don't reboot yet. I think you can do the next step then boot into regular mode and run the disk check and save a reboot.

1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check. C:
2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
4. Check both boxes and then click Start.
You will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, but don't restart yet.

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then click on the arrow in front of Event Viewer. Next Click on the arrow in front of Windows Logs Right click on System and Clear Log, Clear. Repeat for Application.

Reboot. The disk check will run and will probably take an hour or three to finish.

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Then type (with an Enter after each line).

sfc /scannow

(SPACE after sfc. Does this say it couldn't fix everything?)

sigverif

Press Start in the new window. This will check your drivers. If you just get a few when it finishes tell me what they are. If you get a lot just look for those with newish dates (since about the time the problem started.)
You can take a screen shot and attach it if you have a lot but with 64 bit you should not have very many.
(http://graphicssoft....nscreenshot.htm best to save it as a .jpg so the forum will accept it.)

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

It seems my system has lost it's cookies. chkdsk ran, windows started and this sequence went on for three rounds. I tried to boot into safe mode and all that happens is the machine boots until it loads classpnp.sys and restarts itself. I got the machine into startup repair, which said it found nothing, I then tried system recovery which said that I needed to reboot due to a problem found. I clicked on the reboot and startup repair appeared again "attempting repairs". The kicker in all this is that every time I try to reboot the chkdsk starts. The error messages seem to be pointing at a corruption on my hard disk. After some googling, I found that a number of people have had this same symptom. The various forums I've parsed make it sound as if there is a corrupted file on the disk due to a bad area on the disk.

I have a recovery disk for the machine and I'm trying that next. I have a ton of software installed for my business and I'd really hate to lose all the regedit data.

Pretty sure it will be the entry

AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe

Working on a mates laptop at the moment and can cure the problem temporarily by disabling this process

Long term? My research does not bode well, as it's not my laptop I am recommending removing iplayer and related software as reports of this issue go back to 2011 with no fix in sight

ps. I'm no expert, was actually doing research on the issue when I came across this thread

Be careful with your recovery disks. Some of them will just wipe everything and make it the way it came from the factory.

Does the System Restore option in the Recovery options work?
Can you get into a command prompt with the recovery options?
See if

chkntfs /x c:

should stop the check disk from running.

Sometimes just running check disk from the Command Prompt will fix it.

chkdsk /f c:

You might also try the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test on http://pcsupport.abo...p/tophddiag.htm

I like to use Hiren's boot disk:

http://www.hirensboo...BootCD.15.2.zip

Download, save and then right click on it and Extract All. Click on BurnToCD.cmd and follow the instructions to burn the CD. Then move the CD to the sick PC and boot off the CD. (You may need to change the boot order so the CD drive comes before the hard drive. See: http://www.hirensboo...-order-in-bios/ )
Boot into MiniXP

If the miniXP works then the drive is still with us. If it doesn't then the drive is toast. If it does it will let you rescue your files if nothing else.

thanks for the info. If I can't boot into windows, so how would I change the registry entry for this?

Currently working on getting the boot disk you recommended. I've reloaded the classpnp.sys through using knoppix linux. It works great but reloading the sys file did not work. Is there any way to save my regedit file before I resort to losing everything. All my user data is backed up nightly through JungleDisk. I'm more worried about the software that I've had for so long I don't know if I can even find the original serial numbers for.

By the way the chkntfs /x c: does not work, every reboot starts it again.

The registry is stored in c:\Windows\system32\config

It's actually made up of several files in the config folder. System, SAM, Software, Security and Default. On XP you could just copy them from the System Restore folder but I've heard that won't work for Win 7 so I don't know if a copy of them will do you much good. There is also a file NTUSER.DAT which is stored separately in C:\Users\Username\ for each user.

There is an off-line method of reading and manipulating the registry. I haven't tried it in Win 7 but it worked fine in XP.

Is there a tutorial that steps through how to locate a bad driver? chkdsk /x c: run from the command line through system repair found no errors. This would lead me to believe that I've got a bad/corrupted driver on the system.

It might also help to look at the boot log

This one uses msconfig but you can also tell it to create a boot log in the Safe Mode menu.
http://www.techrepub...f-msconfig/3463
Problem with a boot log is that usually the last driver loaded before a crash is innocent. It's the next one that did the deed.
