Hi GeekU Moderator,

I have downloaded the Bluetooth Setup software and ran it. It seems to not be able to detect the bluetooth in my laptop. Usually bluetooth is switched on together with wifi. But this time bluetooth had no response despite wifi was switched on.

The Bluetooth Setup software was stuck here for some time... Bluetooth setup stuck.jpg

What can we do?

Hello AlanY,

I am going to consult with the tech people on this.

Might be a while as we all work in different time zones but I will get back to you. :)

Hello again AlanY,

Try uninstalling the Bluetooth adapter from device manager.

Go to Start > Run and type: devmgmt.msc . Press OK, now Device Manager should open.

Note: In some versions of Windows you may have to go Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run.

Expand the Bluetooth Radios.

Right click the items listed and choose uninstall. (There can be one or more devices)

Reboot your computer now, Bluetooth should be installed automatically at reboot.

Hi GeekU Moderator,

I opened Device Manager using Start>Run. But I couldn't find Bluetooth Radio.. Could it be named differently in Windows 7 or Dell laptops?

Here is what my Device Manager looked like..

Hello again AlanY,

From your first post.

So I tried System Restore and Image Restore but both failed.

After some research I found this:

See the answer from Meghmala. It seems your problem can happen after a System Restore has been carried out.

Perhaps you could try undoing the System Restore, see link below:

Hi GeekU Moderator,

It looks like Money_Cain has the same bluetooth problem. As much as I want to solve this problem immediately by undoing System Restore, I can't help but wonder if old computer problems would resurface?

Yes there is that and the possibility that it wouldn't work. Up to you really.

Do you use Bluetooth? If not, I would just leave it. If you do, it might be worth a try.

I see. Yes I use bluetooth often. But I don't want to face the problems prior to System Restore again. I hope to find a way to reinstall bluetooth without System Restore.

GeekU Moderator, thank you so much for sticking with me all the way from Hard Drive failure to solving the Window Explorer problem. My laptop means alot to me and I am grateful for your help. Hopefully our thread would help people with similar computer disasters.

If you don't want to risk the System Restore option then my best advice would be to go to the Dell help and support and see if you can get help to reinstall.

http://www.dell.com/...c=us&l=en&s=dhs

Also another possibility from a colleague I greatly respect. A link for installing a new driver from Dell. A matter of finding the one appropriate for your machine. If you can't find the appropriate one then back to my above suggestion I am afraid.

I think your logs are clean of malware.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.Posted Image

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware. This will also clean out and reset your Restore Points.

  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories and click on Run
  • Copy and paste the the bolded text below in the box then hit OK

    Combofix /Uninstall

    Posted Image
Step 2
  • Double-click OTL.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTL.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove but it may be a useful tool to keep.

Any other tools remaining may be deleted.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A reminder: Remember to (re-install if uninstalled during cleaning) update and turn back on any anti-malware programs you may have turned off during the cleaning process.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some things that I think are worth having a look at if you don't already know about them:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article Strong passwords: How to create and use them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regularly check that your Java is up to date. Older versions are vunerable to malicious attack.

  • Download Java for Windows

    Reboot your computer.
You also need to unininstall older versions of Java.
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
  • Remove all Java updates except the latest one you have just installed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To help protect your computer in the future:

If you do not already have automatic updates set then it is recommended that you do set Windows to check, download and install your updates automatically.

* Click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update
* Under Windows Update click on Turn automatic updating on or off
* Check items shown to ensure you receive updates automatically. Click OK.

Be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

Go here for some good advice about how to prevent infection.

A fun way to check your online safety literacy.
