After you have uninstalled Word the documents will still remain but may have an icon that looks like this until you reinstall Word.

Its my understanding that Microsoft Word is part of Microsoft Office, correct me if i am wrong, so I would have to uninstall and re-install Office

MS Word can come as a stand alone disk or part of Office.
If yours is part of Office then you will need to reinstall Office.

I really don't know if its stand alone, but it does not appear on Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs as a separate entity. On Start > All Programs, it is pinned on Start menu as Microsoft Office Word 2003, so that should say it all.

It won't do, all it will show in Add/Remove is MS Office.

I havent done anything on the Word problem yet. I do have an Office 2003 installation disk but not sure if it has all the ingredients necessary to re-install. I notice that I have been given some code words with the disc but forgot what they were for. I want to make sure the disc is complete before I un-install my current Office programme.

If you have been given a disk with either 25 characters and numbers separated by hyphens written on the disk or on a separate piece of paper then you have a pirated version of Office.
