This may sound silly, but when I have had problems booting xp, (sometimes with the xp boot from CD floppy set), I have plunked in yn old WIN98 boot floppy and trouble-shot from there. I've made this work so many times for MBR issues and partition corruptions, that I made my own "98 bootdisk from [bleep]", with added utilities. I find that the RAMDRIVE that win98 creates comes in handy, especially because I can use the CD (because of the drivers on the 98 boot disk) If you're still "stuck like chuck", you might try it. It has saved my lunch hour many times.
