I was directed over here by another staff member that thinks I may be infected with Malware. What happened is about a week or so ago, I came home from being gone for about 6 hours, and my computer room smelled like burning electrical wires, so I turned off the computer, since it had been on all day, and tried to reboot. I got a black screen with white text saying did I want to start in safe mode, last known good config, etc. I tried to reboot many times, but it would not work. So I opened her up and found tons & tons of dust, I cleaned all that out and rebooted, and she's been working ever since. BUT, I cannot run Lie Update on my Norton Internet Security, some of my setting on NIS have been changed, I can't change them back. And on some websites I frequently go to, I get an error page. I was getting an error page sometimes on my laptop too, but I ran a full system scan in NIS on there and cleared my cache and cookies, etc on firefox and I haven't had a problem on my laptop since. But my desktop is being wierd still. I tried to download Firefox on my desktop, and after installing it, I cannot launch it. So I ran AdAware, but it would not let me check for updates. I ran CWShredder, would not let me check for updates. I tried to install Spybot S&D, but it would not let me install. I installed HiJackThis and heres what I have so far. Looks like there may be some trojans there.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknigh...hredder.sfx.exe and run it. Uncompress the file and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknigh...hredder.sfx.exe and run it. Uncompress the file and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Thanks for your advice, I will try it as soon as I can turn on my computer again. I started to smell the burning smell again and it shut down on me and I have not been able to start it yet. How can I get all this junk on my computer when I have suppossedly the best (I've been told) anti-virus stuff, Norton Internet Security??? How does it get past this? Do you recommend another anti-virus software that is any better?

Personally, I don't like Norton Internet Security at all. That program causes more problems than anything for some users.

All these infections/malware got in because Norton doesn't do spyware cleaning. Nor does other antivirus programs. I heard that in the future this might be incorporated into antivirus programs, but for now, we use other programs to catch spyware/malware. The ones we recommend most (and are free) are Ad-aware, Spybot and Microsoft Antispyware.

I do recommend another antivirus (and firewall since you won't have it once you uninstall the Internet Security Suite). I can't say that anything is the best out there, but I have used AVG (antivirus) and ZoneAlarm (firewall) for many years now. They are superb in what they do. Just make sure to get the updates if there are any. So if you intend to use those, uninstall the whole Norton package. Keep in mind though, this is not to say that malware can't come in. As with Norton, AVG and ZoneAlarm provide protection against other things like viruses and trojans. ZoneAlarm may be useful since some of these malware try to phone home and you will catch this since ZoneAlarm will ask you if you want so and so programs to go online. If unsure, say no.

Try to do the fixes I gave you as soon as possible and post back a new log.

Well I tried to do what you said, but my computer will not cooperate. I ran the virus scan from Panda and it said I had 99 infected files, but it could not delete them. I tried to do the things you said in safe mode, but everytime I rebotted in safe mode, my keyboard and mouse did not work. I tried it like 3 or 4 times, than I did the rest in regular mode. I ran CleanUp and it deleted over 1.8Gb of junk! WOW! Here is my new HJT file. Thanks again!

Did you save the log from Panda with the 99 files it can't delete? Can you delete them yourself? If so, delete all those files. If you are unsure, post the log/report from that scan here. I will help you out with that.

Yes, it seems like you have a USB mouse and keyboard. If you are using one of the fancy ones which requires a driver, they won't work in safe mode. So it's ok that you did it in Normal Mode.

So delete those files found by Panda if they are viruses/malware. If you have no other problems:

Your log is clean.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

I still cannot view or log into certain web pages. I cannot check for updates in any of my anti-spy, anti-virus software. I uninstalled & reinstalled Ad-Aware and it found 116 critical objects, which I quarantined. CWShredder found none, but I cannot check for updates. I cannot run Norton Live Update or scan for viruses. I cannot log into my webmail on my domain. I just don't know what else to do. Here is the latest HJT Log. Please recheck this when you can. OK, try to bear with me here. Do you have the log for the Panda scan? You said that it detected 99 files it can't remove. We have to remove it then.

No I did not save the file for the Panda Scan, but just last night I uninstalled & reinstall my NIS, ran a full system scan and ran Live Update and it came up clean. I uninstalled & reinstalled Ad-Aware and deleted all the critical objects. So do you need me to run the Panda again? That item in HJT that you asked about, sparedollar is my picture hosting. That file should be ok, right? As for Zone Alarm, I believe I could access all my sites after I installed it, for as much as I can remember. So just tell me what I should do now, if you want me to rerun Panda I will. I can log into most of all the sites I couldn't before. So let me know what you thnk. Thanks!!

Yes, that sparedollar entry should be ok then if you know what it's for.

Yes, run Panda again because it detected almost 100 files according to your last scan that Norton didn't detect. I'm thinking that it might be those files that are causing the access to certain sites.
