Just looking for a less power hungry alternative for AVG on my old 2003 warhorse.
was thinking....Avast
any ideas most welcome

There are several free AntiVirus Software worth to try on.
I would recommend MSE or Avira as they are rather lightweight and work well. Avast is also a good option though personally I don't like it.
