My HDD is 500GB.

When I installed XP Pro via a CD it asked if I wanted to make a partition and the decision could not be reversed or changed. Not knowing what I should do I plumped to have a 30GB partition (might come in useful and I had 500).

Now looking at its properties it says:

C: Used 84.2GB; Free 381GB; Capacity 465GB

Now 85+381=467. Looking at the graphical display of the disk it shows no partition as does also not in Disk Management. There is certainly no drive letter anywhere, can't remember assigning one.

Now usable disk size is always smaller than the stated one on the package but that 465GB + that possible 30GB partition 'I made' is suspiciously near 500GB. Is this just a coincidence or what?

Any ideas please - thanks.

On a 500GB drive what you would actually have left is 465.66GB whether there was anything on it or not.

Put the size in here if you are doubtful.

You say there is no drive letter but C: is there for all to see so I'm assuming XP is on that.

A screen shot of Disk Management would be handy to look at.

Thanks for that Wolfeymole.

Your 465.66GB as appropriate for a 500GB drive really confirms that there is no other partition. Saying that I could see no drive letter I meant pertaining to a partition other than C.

That instruction to make a partition when loading XP is odd - I'm glad it didn't work actually.

That calculator is good!

Cheers!

You freely admit to making a 30GB partition when installing XP so I should imagine the rest of the drive will be Unallocated space,

Go to Start then to Run
Type in compmgmt.msc and click Enter
On left side click on Disk Management
On right side you will see you hard drive.
Male sure the window is open all the way on the top right so I can see all the info it has.
Now I need you to take a screenshot and attach it to your next reply. Do the following to take a screenshot while the above is open and showing on your desktop.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG or PNG and save it to your Desktop
Make sure the window is open all the way so I can see everything on the top right window.
