What type of preventative service do you recommend for malware and what not? Preferably free? His computer is just sluggish sometimes and he has mccaffe or something?

How long does the McAfee licence have remaining ?

The sluggishness may be due to lack of preventative maintenance and allowing to many programmes to start with windows. So we will tackle those next and then see what that does

First we will clear all the junk files

Clear Cache/Temp Files
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

THEN

We will reduce the number of startups

Run Autoruns from this location

Select Run at the download prompt
The programme will open

Remove the ticks on the lefthand side from all except the following :

McAfee
Skyhook Wireless XPS Service
HPWirelessAssistant

Reboot the computer and let me know if the sluggishness has been reduced
