my computer had a hard disk failure and i get a blue screen flash just after the windows logo. I have tried to repair the system but to no avail, I'm not just trying to retrieve one of my files.

I was able to bring up the Windows Recovery Options by booting with a disk and have pulled up the command prompt (X:windows\system32 ) and am now trying to copy the folder over to the external hard drive in port e: but the command prompt keeps telling me that the system cannot find the path specified. But i am sure the path it typed correctly.

I'm running windows 7 on a hp probook 4530s

See this tutorial by theog on How to Copy & Paste in Recovery Console on Windows 7 or Vista for a neat trick to use to allow you to Copy & Paste from the Recovery Console to save files and folders.

Also, to do this via Command Prompt, you need to copy from the Windows 7 partition, which may be C: D:.

Use diskpart to see where it really is. On mine, diskpart, list disk and list volume show:
>diskpart

Microsoft DiskPart version 6.2.9200

Copyright (C) 1999-2012 Microsoft Corporation.
On computer: DESKTOP

DISKPART> list disk

Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt

  Disk 0 Online 279 GB 2048 KB
  Disk 1 Online 119 GB 0 B
  Disk 2 Online 1397 GB 1024 KB
