SQL Server Error Message - Help!

Hi,

My friend has had this error message problem on his PC when it loads up in XP as of today.

It reads:

SQL SERVER could not find the default instance (MSSQLSERVER) - please specify the name of an existing instance on the invocation of sqlservr.exe.
If you believe that your installation is corrupt or has been tampered with, uninstallthen re-run setup to correct his problem.

Is it a genuine proble or maybe a virus of some sort?

How does he fix this?

Hi,

I would say most likely isn't a virus problem, but lets see...

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options:
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Hi,

I would say most likely isn't a virus problem, but lets see...

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options:

  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Hi,

On the list of installed programs I don't see Microsoft SQL Server 2xxx or Microsoft SQL Server 2xxx Express Edition probably installed at some point an then removed leaving the service behind...

You can simply disable the service click Start > Run on the Run window type: services.msc
on the list of services locate MSSQLSERVER double click to access the Properties and change the Startup type to Disabled

Oh, sorry i uninstalled both of those programs you mention but didnt stop the message poppin up.

I will do the Serives.msc and i let you know if this stops it.
