Sounds like a hardware problem of some kind. video adapter, Power, or RAM. Checking the connections was a good idea. You can run the built-in memory test. http://www.sevenforu...stics-tool.html Best to do several passes to be sure the RAM is good. Speccy will tell you the voltages. It's not a perfect test but you might see a change over time.

When it crashes can you boot into CMOS/BIOS setup? Does that look bad too?

When it crashes it's a total freeze up and the only way out is to power down with the power button. Last time i saw there coloured lines on screen was when my graphics card failed, i never replaced it as i had the extra port built into the motherboard, if that makes sense.

So far it has been okay since removing and reseating the ram but i will carry out tests and see how it goes.
