Hi there,

First of all, thank you for your help. the problems I am encounterring with my laptop are that it freezes 5 mins after start up and I cant do anything just reboot it again. I tried loading it in safe mode, but it would freeze again, however since yesterday it started working in safe mode and in safe mode with networking. I get an error message before it freezes: Exetender fatal error. please download the player again. i did my research on web, but i dont seem to be able to get rid of free ride games if thats whats causing the problem. I have tried restoring and recovering my system - doesnt work. could I please get some help or at least get a link if there is a previous post that solved this problem.
thank you.

Error - 24/09/2013 10:30:23 | Computer Name = ASTUCIULIUKAS | Source = Ntfs | ID = 262199
Description = The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please
run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:.

Hard drive problem. Let's run a disk check and see if we can fix it:

1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check. C:
2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
4. Check both boxes and then click Start.
You will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, but don't restart yet.

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then the Event Viewer. Next select Windows Logs. Right click on System and Clear Log, Clear. Repeat for Application. Reboot. The disk check will run and will probably take an hour or more to finish.

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Then type (with an Enter after each line).

sfc /scannow

(SPACE after sfc. This will check your critical system files. Does this finish without complaint? IF it says it couldn't fix everything then:

Copy the next two lines:

findstr /c:"[SR]" \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log > \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt
notepad \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue. Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter. Copy and paste the text from notepad or if it is too big, just attach the file.)

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

Run OTL, Quickscan and post the log (you will only get one this time)

You can try to run check disk from Safe Mode with Command Prompt:

chkdsk /r

To get into Safe Mode with Command Prompt:

Reboot and when you see the maker's logo, hear a beep or it talks about F8, start tapping the F8 key slowly. Keep tapping until the Safe Mode Menu appears and choose Safe Mode with Command. Login with your usual login.

You can also try:

Hit F8 over and over as soon as your boot up screen appears. (The computer one, which appears before the Windows one.)
This will take you to a DOS-like screen. Select Repair Recovery Manager. (You may be prompted to log in as an administrator user so that you can access the Command Prompt.)
Form the Repair Recover Manager, select Command Prompt. This will start a command prompt window in the X: drive.
Enter C: to switch to the C drive.
Enter chkdsk /f (or chkdsk /r)
When asked to force a dismount, enter Y
The disk will now be checked.
Note the results and close the command prompt. (Mine couldn't save the results to the logfile, because it was on the C drive. Not a train smash.)
Reboot.

Can you run the sfc /scannow command?

good morning,

i've tried running chkdsk /r through safe mode with command prompt. the same result as before: schedules the scan after next reboot but no scan window opens when i restart. does the scan maybe run in the background without showing.
also tried the second option, however dont seem to have an option for repair recovery manager when i press F8. the only options are SAFE MODE, SAFE MODE NETWORKING, SAFE MODE COMMAND, ENABLE BOOT LOGGING, ENABLE VGA MODE, LAST KNOWN GOOD, DIRECTORY SERVICES RESTORE MODE, DEBUGGING MODE, DISABLE AUTOMATIC RESTART ON SYSTEM FAILURE, START WINDOWS NORMALY, REBOOT, RETURN to OS CHOICES MENU. after i choose one of these options and press enter it asks me to select operating system: either Microsoft recovery console or Microsoft XP professional.

Disk Check does not run in the background. It has to take over full control of the hard drive. When it runs you just see a black screen with some text that tells you it is working and how far it has gotten.

Try booting into the Microsoft recovery console instead of regular windows. If you need more time to select the recovery console: Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery -Settings, and change the Time to Display the List of Operating Systems from two to 10 seconds. OK

when i booted into recovery console it came up with an error message in blue background saying:
a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen appears again follow these steps: check for viruses on your computer. remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption. then restart.

this is the first time i've seen this screen.and ive not installed anything on my laptop for ages.

Just more hard drive corruption I'm afraid. About all you can do is pull the drive and use a USB adapter to connect it to another PC and run check disk on it that way unless you have an XP disk you can boot from.

Do you know who makes your drive? Seagate has a nice program that can be burnt to a CD and then booted from that will check and repair the drive. I assume you can get it to go into BIOS/CMOS setup and that it will not crash no matter how long it stays in that mode.

If you go into BIOS setup you should be able to find the part number of your hard drive. If you tell me the number I can tell you if there is a program to test it tho without a friend to burn the CD I'm not sure what good it will do you.

What country are you in?

MK1646GSX is your hard drive. The other is your CD/DVD.

Toshiba is a problem. They do not make a drive test program. People usually use the Hitachi one but it needs for Windows to work. Some people say you can use the Seagate Seatools for DOS program which can be burned to a CD and booted from:
http://www.seagate.c...ols-dos-master/
I'm not sure it will work. Seems last time I tried it that it wanted to work with only Seagate and Maxell drives.

You should be able to use Hiren's Boot CD.
There is a program on it called HDDScan which will test most drives. (I think Hiren's also includes Seatools for DOS)
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
This a BIG! Zip File so save it. Then right click on it and Extract all. Put a blank CD in the drive and then double click on BurnToCD.cmd. When it finishes you boot off it and run the MiniXP program. This will give you a fake XP desktop. (If the MiniXp won't work that means that the harddrive is unusable.) Start, All Programs and hunt around until you find HDDScan. Probably under Hard Disk Tools. I think one of the tests it has is called Verify. It will also tell you the model of the hard drive. Hiren's is a good CD to have as it contains a lot of useful tools and allows you to access your data even if Windows isn't working. Perhaps the MiniXP program will allow you to run chkdsk /r c: ? Never tried it.

Replacing your harddrive is going to be a problem. It's the older PATA/IDE style and not a SATA drive which is what you will usually see in stores. I did find one on Amazon.de for a decent price. http://www.amazon.de...e/dp/B0037NYQ7K (You need to look for 2,5 zoll, intern and PATA. You can get a bigger drive than 250 GB if you want to add some space (but it will probably be very expensive). Just make sure it is PATA. In order to clone it, you will need an IDE to USB adapter something like this:
http://www.amazon.de.../dp/B004MUDS4Y/

Hiren's has a CloneDisk program if the new drive doesn't come with one. The last time I tried to use Western Digital's boot from CD tool it did not work.

Changing out the hard drive usually just requires a small Phillips screwdriver. Sometimes on the older laptops the hard drive will have an adapter on the IDE connection which you will need to pry off and move to the new drive.
