You guys have helped me lately on my aunt's computer, and I'm so very thankful. I hope you can help me with my computer now. I have it set to go to sleep in 20 minutes. I also have the monitor set to go black after 10 minutes. I have a password to get back to my desktop after coming out of sleep. For about the past week, my computer has been freezing up after coming out of sleep. I even went into "Power Settings" and reset it to the original settings. That's where they are now (well almost). I also have a TB external HD hooked up, but don't think that would cause any problems, but not sure.

Well, anyways, is there certain power settings that I should change, or would there be a bigger problem? Also, I don't know if this could be connected or not, but I have problems clicking on anything. It takes me several clicks to get a window to open. I just have to reboot when the PC freezes or when the mouse won't work properly. BTW...I have changed the batteries in the mouse and have also tried a corded mouse, but I still have the same problems.

Believe it or not, this is a common type of repair. Pulling a system out of sleep/hibernation has been a popular item, with many repairs for a long time! So let's take a peak at the obvious and move up from there. I will post my replies in steps, please do them in order and we'll work through this.
STEP ONE: Temp File Cleaner
As a good rule of thumb, I like to get rid of temp/junk files off any and all systems I work on. Reason being that I've seen some build up of caches and junk files cause all sorts of chaos on multiple occasions, so why not just take a few minutes to clean the PC up. However before you download and run the program, please make sure you save all work and close out of all programs accept your browser (which also will need to be closed down after the download, before running the program).

Now that we've saved and closed out of all your applications/programs, please download Temp File Cleaner (TFC). Once that is done, close out of all your open applications/programs and then please 'Right Click' and select Run As Administrator from the Context Menu. Please let this run, uninterrupted. Once it's finished, it may ask you to reboot your machine - If it does, please allow it to reboot at this time and after Windows loads back up move on to the next step. If it does not require a reboot, please move on to the next step now. STEP TWO: Gathering Information
  • At this point and time I'd like you to get the utility MiniToolBox and run it with the following checked items.
    • List content of Hosts
    • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Devices
    • Only-Problems (leave it checked)
  • List Minidump Files

After you've selected just the above items, please then hit GO. Once it's done running, which normally doesn't take too long, it will have a text or log file pop up. Please copy/paste that into a reply.
STEP THREE: System File Check
  • I'd like you to start a System File Check (SFC). This is a built in system tool that Microsoft has for checking the current file systems out and making any necessary repairs. To do this, you will need to open up an Elevated Command Prompt, which you can do by following these easy steps:
  • Open your Start Menu
  • Select All Programs
  • Then select Accessories
  • 'Right Click' on Command Prompt
  • Select Run as administrator from the Context Menu
Now you should see the Command Prompt window open at this time, which I need you to type the exact text found below in the code box hitting your 'ENTER' key after you finish typing it.
SFC /SCANNOW > "C:\Users\Public\Desktop\SFC Results.txt"
This may take a while, so please try not to interrupt it or use the PC as much as possible while it runs. Once it is done, it will go back to the original line of text you saw. At that point, I need you to look on your desktop for the text file named "SFC Results.txt". Please copy and paste that into another reply, in which then we can review.
Once you have posted the information from each step, I will then review it and get back to you ASAP. Also just to be safe, try to adjust the sleep time to a lower number and remove the external drive and any other USB storage devices - Then let it go to sleep. Once it's in sleep mode, wake it up and see if any change. If there is a change, put back in the drive and repeat. Post back here with any results if you get them before I can analyse all the above information.

I finally got to run the Temp File Cleaner and the MiniToolBox program. Listed below is the results of that. But through trial and error, I found that the computer goes to sleep erratically and also wakes up the same way. I unplugged the TB HD the first time, and it came out of sleep ok, then I plugged it back in and the computer wouldn't go to sleep at all. It showed lots of HD activity that shouldn't have been happening. The monitor shuts off just fine, but now it won't go to sleep. I unplugged the TB HD last night because of the HD activity, and it finally stopped and by morning when I woke up, I thought the computer was asleep. No HD activity, the monitor was off, but when I tried it, it had never went to sleep after all. I have run every scan possible (I think), and as far as I know, my computer is clean. So don't know why this is happening. But anyways, here is the results of the MiniToolBox:

My posts duplicate themselves, and I don't know how to delete one. So I have to just delete the entry and type in something else. It won't let me post an empty Reply or Delete.

Hi, sorry to bother you, but was just wondering if you saw where I posted the information you told me to do about my PC freezing up when coming out of sleep. I don't know how to send you to where I posted it, but it's been a few days, and I was just wondering if you had seen it. The problem seems to be getting worse, because the PC wasn't going to sleep at all when I re-posted, but I have been keeping my TB HD unplugged, and now it is going to sleep, but won't come back with the password prompt. It goes straight to my desktop. Thanks, and again...sorry to bother you.

This is the PM I was sent. Just so everyone understands my reply.
STEP FOUR: Check Disk The password screen not coming up is not worse, it actually shows consistency of system coming out of sleep. Now it does throw another red flag up, which is your external drive seems to be cuasing issues which indicate a possibly failing drive. So what I'd like to do at this point is to plug in the drive, then find out the drive letter and then please do the following command replacing the % sign with your Drive Letter for your External Drive.
ChkDsk %: /f /x
This will take a while, please allow it to run fully through though.

I ran that in the DOS command and it only took less than a minute. I have been keeping the external HD unplugged, so how could it be the problem? My computer won't go to sleep at all now, and when it was for awhile, it wouldn't prompt for my password. I don't know how to post the results of the scan you had me run from DOS. It won't let me copy. Do you need that info?
