I wanted to buy a tumble dryer from John Lewis stores. SO found the JL site using google and found the particular model that I was interested in. All details were displayed on the screen, but when I tried to buy no "ADD TO BASKET" button was displayed anywhere. Tried again this time using Firefox with same result ! Third time lucky using Google Chrome - up comes the necessary "ADD TO BASKET" button.

I had some weeks previously had similar problems when using Windows Explorer and moving from that to Firefox had seemed to cure it.

Can anybody suggest what's wrong and why it happens.

Thanks in anticipation.

A lot of these type of 'glitches' of sorts can be caused due to caching issues. Let's start by clearing everything out real fast...

STEP ONE: TFC Clean Up
As a good rule of thumb, I like to get rid of temp/junk files off any and all systems I work on. Reason being that I've seen some build up of caches and junk files cause all sorts of chaos on multiple occasions, so why not just take a few minutes to clean the PC up.However before you download and run the program, please make sure you save all work and close out of all programs accept your browser (which also will need to be closed down after the download, before running the program).

Now that we've saved and closed out of all your applications/programs, please download Temp File Cleaner (TFC). Once that is done, close out of all your open applications/programs and then please 'Right Click' and select Run As Administrator from the Context Menu. Please let this run, uninterrupted. Once it's finished, it may ask you to reboot your machine - If it does, please allow it to reboot at this time and after Windows loads back up move on to the next step. If it does not require a reboot, please move on to the next step now. However please take note of the red number, displaying amount of removals, and post it in a reply. STEP TWO: MiniToolBox Clean Up/Reset
  • At this point and time I'd like you to get the utility MiniToolBox and run it with the following checked items.
  • Flush DNS
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
After you've just the above items, please then hit GO. Once it's done running, which normally doesn't take too long, it will have a text or log file pop up. Please copy & paste that into a reply.

Hi - Many thanks for replying to my plea. Apologies for taking so long to answer partly due to being non-available yesterday and partly due to problems completing your requests today.
Although I was a 'computerman' for over 34 years professionally I'm not up to standard in todays everyday'things to do and consequently tasks like copy and paste which should be easy, turn out to be a nightmare. !!

TFC ran rapidly and screened 136.00 in red..
MinToolBox also ran rapidly and reported everything to be cleared. So I did a COPY on the message and attempted to PASTE it somewhere that I could get at it and include it in this reply. No success. No matter what I tried. So I created a NEW folder. SAVED the data into a file called ronresult.txt in case there were other result.txt messages abounding in my HD.

When I looked for that file to transfer it to the new folder - no sign of it - Now its probably there somewhere BUT I can't find it Sorry

Hope we can proceed without it.

Well, that does change things a bit. Please re-run the MiniToolBox and get a new report/log. Post that up once you have it and we'll go from there.

Hi PhrantiQ
Am still having the same problem with COPY/PASTe - just can't find a folder to receive my COPY. Each place I try the PASTE option has been greyed out. Also cannot find anywhere within C:\ where the result.txt is residing. I notice that my notepad.exe is now notepad++.exe since 10/10/2013 and wonder whether that can be havung an effect.
Obviously if I can't manage to paste data to you we are in trouble from now on. SO am now going to enter by hand the text shewn in the result.txt file :-

result.txt

Flushed the DNS resolver cache

IE PROXY

Proxy is not enabled
No Proxy Server is set

RESET FF PROXY Settings

Firefox Proxy settings were reset

HOSTS : Contents

END OF LOG

Hope that this is of some use to you. Perhaps you can guide me in finding a way to beating the COPY/PASTE problem.

Thanks for your help.

That log isn't really, full or complete. Can you try running it and saving the log to your machine, then uploading it on here? Or trying to 'copy and paste' using the right click menu versus using the ctrl+c and ctrl+v keyboard commands.

STEP THREE: System File Check
  • I'd like you to start a System File Check (SFC). This is a built in system tool that Microsoft has for checking the current file systems out and making any necessary repairs. To do this, you will need to open up an Elevated Command Prompt, which you can do by following these easy steps:
  • Open your Start Menu
  • Select All Programs
  • Then select Accessories
  • 'Right Click' on Command Prompt
  • Select Run as administrator from the Context Menu
Now you should see the Command Prompt window open at this time, which I need you to type the exact text found below in the code box hitting your 'ENTER' key after you finish typing it.
SFC /SCANNOW > "C:\Users\Public\Desktop\SFC Results.txt"
This may take a while, so please try not to interrupt it or use the PC as much as possible while it runs. Once it is done, it will go back to the original line of text you saw. At that point, I need you to look on your desktop for the text file named "SFC Results.txt". Please copy and paste that into another reply, in which then we can review.

I am logged in as an administrator

I get no opportunity to set "Run as an administrator" which I assumed would be because of my login.

However after typing in the SCANNOW command I got an Access Denied message.

I searched out context.menu with some difficulty and it does not contain a RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR option.

It is a Google chrome context menu.

Context Menu is a menu of options. Right click some where, you see that menu that pops up? It's a form of a context menu. Here is a guide for it, maybe you can follow this... HERE.
I will now look over your log.

Alright your log doesn't have much listed, however there are a few things I'd like you to do for me.

STEP FOUR: Windows Repair Utility
  • Please download Windows Repair (AIO - Portable) and go to the 2nd from last tab labeled Start Repairs. Once on this tab, please select the button Start. The warning that pops up can be followed or not, however sometimes running those at this time can be non beneficial or further worsen the issues.

Inside of here, please check all of the following items:
    • Register System Files
    • Repair Internet Explorer
    • Repair Hosts File
    • Remove Policies Set By Infections
    • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
    • Remove Temp Files
    • Repair Proxy Settings
    • Repair MSI (Windows Installer)
    • Repair File Associations
    • Ignore drop down list, just select the parent.
  • Restore Important Windows Services
  • Set Windows Services To Default At Start
Once the proper items have been selected, please click on Start. If the program requests you to reboot your machine after running, please allow it to do so. Once you've rebooted please see if your issue persists and post back with the results and any errors/changes you notice. STEP FIVE: Additional Information Gathering
  • Although we already ran MiniToolBox once, I need additional information as it turns out from it. Please rerun it and attach the new logs...
At this point and time I'd like you to get the utility MiniToolBox and run it with the following checked items.
    • List Winsock Entries
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Devices
    • Only-Problems (leave it checked)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory Size

After you've just the above items, please then hit GO. Once it's done running, which normally doesn't take too long, it will have a text or log file pop up. Please copy & paste that into a reply.
STEP SIX: Resetting I.E.
  • Let's go ahead and reset your basic browser settings to default, which may change the appropriate setting to resolve your issue.
  • Now open your Start Menu and go into your Control Panel
  • Once in your Control Panel go to Internet Options (might want to make the 'View by:' set to small)
  • In this window, please go to the Advanced tab.
  • On this tab, let's click the following; Reset...
  • Don't check the box on the next page, then click 'Reset' at the bottom
  • Once this little window (Reset Internet Explorer Settings) puts check boxes next to all 3 items, click 'Close'
  • This will exit the Internet Options, please reopen it via Control Panel
  • Let's verify a few settings, listed below;
  • Go to the tab 'Connections' and click on 'LAN Settings'. Unless using a proxy, verify 'Automatically detect settings' checkbox is checked and nothing else is entered.
  • Go back to the 'General' tab now and in the 'Browsing History' select 'Delete' and then check all the boxes except 'Form Data' and 'Passwords'. Then hit 'Delete' at the bottom. Give this a minute to run.
  • Make sure to also set the 'Homepage' to a known page (www.Google.com for instance) while on the 'General' tab.
  • Now close and restart your Internet Explorer. Does issue persist?

Once you get those steps done, plus the System File Check step... See if you have same issue and how the system is running and post back.

Hi STEP 4 Windows Repair Utility Ran OK, though start button took a lot of finding.
Looked evrey place I could think of but found all the buttons. Can't positively say that any particular program was always faulty. The problem shifted around a bit. For instance - I lost a dead cert winner on EBay when I placed a last 20 seconds bid and the CONFIRM button did not appear.

Have attached the three logs it produced. Will now carry on with STEP 5

Alright so from your log I see some bloatware/junkware, however I also notice a few things out of date. Before we deal with that, if you try opening the site you were having issues with in FireFox now - Does it work as it should? How about in Internet Explorer? Post back with that and we'll go from there. Also let me know of any other issues or items that may have been resolved by that repair process.

Hi - I changed to Firefox and began making a similar purchase. When I selected an item to buy - up came a small box with quantity =1 and a description but definitely NO ADD TO BASKET button. Since I remembered the layout of that box from my eventually successful purchase made on mywife's laptop, I was able to make a speculative click on a particular spot on the screen and up came the add to basket phrase.

So that's it for Firefox. Would you like me to repeat for Chromegoogle and Google. Not sure that I have windows explorer anywhere. Incidentally Firefix uses Google to search.

My efforts in STEP 6 were NOT good.

Within the advanced tab in INTERNET OPTIONS, I cannot find a 'view by'

I get an immediate long list of tickable boxes in groups such as Accessibility / Browsing / HTTP1 / International Multimedia etc.
The only two RESET options are in Accessibility and are Reset text size , Reset zoom level.

I didn't think I should proceed further until you get me back on track on STEP 6
