i have a acer aspire x1700 with windows vista Home Premium . is Windows 7 Ultimate compatible with my pc ?

Probably is because Windows 7 isn't so different from Vista, but to make sure use the Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

Edit: In case you want to upgrade keeping all your programs and files the following chart will help you in decide the version of Windows 7 to choose.
