I did all the tests and repairs of Tweaking Windows Repair. It still gives the permissions error message.
On Step 2, under "See if Check Disk is needed", when I run that, it says: Error found on the drive. Check Disk is needed.
Even though I had done that many times, I redid it but got no change.

My HDD is getting old? Is that a joke? I bought the laptop 3 years ago.
Thanks for the advice of cloning. I already have backed up my data and have some images of the OS disk.

As I said in the very first post, the problem is resolved as soon as I disable the Shell Hardware Detection (ShellHWDetection) service from starting at boot (through msconfig). So I guess it's something very specific to that.

I tried uninstalling Winamp but also didn't help.

Does any of you know where in the registry is the key that says which program is set to start when an audio CD is inserted?

Gday.
Sorry the issue is still present.
I do make alterations to my own machines using Regedit, but am not experienced enough to give directions to you.
service name, ShellHWDetection.
Executable Name: svchost.exe -k netsvcs

So it looks like if you set HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer/NoDriveTypeAutoRun to B1, it will disable AutoRun for your ODD. (Sounds like you're familiar with the registry) Give that a shot and see if disabling AutoRun will keep the ShellHWDetection service from calling.

Depending on the results of your registry editing (and wither you are happy with it or not) you may have want to check both of these sites out for more information:

This one shows what the registry values are to disable certain drives:
http://en.wikipedia....riveTypeAutoRun - check the table shown at about a third of way down the page; B1 would disable AutoPlay for CD/DVD, Network and Unknown drives (love the Unknown listed there).

This one points out the Group Policy settings on your machine (at least how to get to them; I found mine under Windows Components > AutoPlay Policies): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895108

If the policies / registry are 'out of whack' there could be some issues.... Food for thought....

Let us know how things turn out. Thanks.

The Admiral and dbreeze I wish I had seen your posts earlier because a few hours ago I decided to do activate a previous System Restore Point.
(that actually was corrupted as all the other ones.so I had to reinstall old windows image.. Now the problem is gone of course, but I have others cause it's the first time I restore an image and it seems i didn't quite got the whole bakcup strategy right.)

As for the registry key, I had tried changing a value there for HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer/NoDriveTypeAutoRun.
I don't remember which value I tried. But id was of no help. Maube I should have tried other values too. Anyway it's too late now. Thank you all for your help and I don't know if i should close this topic? Or leave it open for others who may add a solution they have found?

Thank you,

Adrien

You know, I have the exact same problem on my home PC. I just eject and reinsert the disc and then it works again, but if the disc is already in the drive when I try and open it, I get the error.

Looking in on this thread with great interest... (I don't have time to fix my own computers  )

You mean for CDBurnerXP to work?

Actually no... I don't use CDBurnerXP at all and haven't had it on this system! If I just want to open the drive to view files on the disc already in there, or if I want to open a video disc with any player when the disc is already in there, sometimes it does it. But it doesn't bother me (open/close drive and issue fixed) and I don't know when it actually started to do a restore.

Ah well.
