My sys wouldn't shut down or turn off. I had to use the power button. After completing all the recommened steps before submitting my HJT scan list, that problem is fixed. BUT now upon re-booting, something is knocking my McAfee Firewall off. I can manually turn it back on and also, I get an error msg "RUNNER ERROR.."Runner file name (Updates from HP.exe) lacks a "-" (the app id separtor)". Also, when I first tried to reply to your original msg., I came here and my system totally froze up. I had to use the power button to re-boot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Disable ad-watch for now. It will interfere with the fix.

Please scan your system with Ad-aware:
Ad-aware SE - Download - Home Page

• If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
• After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
• Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
• Once the definitions have been updated:
• Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
  • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
  • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
    • "Automatically save logfile"
    • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
    • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
  • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
  • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
  • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
  • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
  • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
  • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
  • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
  • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
  • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
  • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
  • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
    • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
    • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
    • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
  • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
    • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
    • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
    • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
    • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
  • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
  • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
  • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
  • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
• Close all programs except ad-aware.
• Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
• Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
• After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

System will now re-start, but it slow, like it's trying to hang on something. If I leave it alone, it will re-boot.

Please scan your system with Ad-aware:
Ad-aware SE - Download - Home Page

1. If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
2. After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
3. Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
4. Once the definitions have been updated:
5. Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
* Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
* Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
o "Automatically save logfile"
o Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
o Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
o Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
* Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
* Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
* Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
* Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
* Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
* Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
* Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
* Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
* Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
* Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
* Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
o "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
o "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
o "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
* Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
o "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
o "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
o "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
o "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
* Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
* Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
* Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
* Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
6. Close all programs except ad-aware.
7. Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
8. Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
9. After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.


Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Dear coachwife,
I did your last instructions and sys wouldn't re-start at all. After a hard start (using the power button) , Ad-aware listed 4 entries that it didn't agree with, so, the first time I clicked ACCEPT. Then tried a re-start. It wouldn't do it. After another hard start, the same Warnings for Ad-Aware came up and this time I selected "BLOCK". Now it will re-start. The HJT scan below is after I "BLOCKED" the warnings shown by AD. Also, during the step 8 - run AD scan and remove everything, then reboot, I had to do a hard start to re-boot. When I did this, the AD Warnings came up and ALSO a Windows - No Disk error box stating "X There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive". After BLOCKING the AD warnings, it went away. I hope all of this makes sense. The scan below is the current settings on my sys. (after selecting "BLOCK" on the AD warnings, which seems to let me re-boot normally w/out the Windows-No Disk error_)

Adwatch is still running. As long as it is running, you won't be able to delete items in the hijack this log.

What items does AD give you warnings regarding? Can you copy and paste them?

You might disable the cookie wall also. I'm not familiar with that program but it may be interfering with the fix.

Dear wife of coach,
Sorry so long to reply. Busy weekend. On my last scan, I had everything disabled..Ad-Aware, CookieWall, Pop-up Stopper. Nothing was open during that scan. After I rebooted and Ad-Aware opened up and gave me those warnings. I don't remember which particular ones they were. It was 4 warnings. The first time this happened, I choose to "accept" the changes. After doing that. I had a world of problems. Errors, missing file extensions and such. SO, I rebooted, Ad-Aware opened up with the same warnings and this time I choose to "block" the attempts to change certain files. Now all is fine. System shuts down properly with no trouble. At any rate. Here is my latest HJT scan.

Please disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.

To disable Ad-Watch:

Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options, "Active" and "Automatic".

Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.

Uncheck both options as shown in the accompanying sample. (You can enable the options after resolving your problem).

Run hijack this and close all open windows and disconnect from the internet. Put check marks next to these:

Please download CleanUp! - Download - HomePage
Install and run. Click on the button labeled CleanUp!.

When it finishes it will prompt you to restart Windows - there will be one or two files it cannot delete when Windows is running - however, they will be deleted next time Windows starts up.

Reboot and post a new log.
