Adware:Adware/nCase No disinfected Windows Registry

Did you see if the registry cleaner will remove it?

There are also other online scans that you can use if you like :tazz:

Please run a free online virus scan at these two sites:
HouseCall
Kaspersky

Well, I think that does it....?

Hey, Tom.

No... I tried all the applicable programs, including the registry cleaner, and it just won't vacate the computer. It appears, as shown by the Activescan logs, that 3 of the accounts have the nCase infection, and 1 has Statblaster.

I'm also including the HiJackThis log from the Administrator account listed in Safe Mode. From a novice standpoint, I see nothing of concern in the HijackThis log.

Scott,

Correct the HiJackThis is clean ;)

lets try this on account one and see if it brings anything up.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
  • Copy and past the StartupList from the notebook onto your post
Thanks,

:tazz:

Ok, I feel good about this....lol

http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Scroll down to

Registry Search Tool
Search the Windows Registry for input string and display results (easier than repeatedly hitting the F3 key in RegEdit).

Script revised 13 Dec 2001 to work with Windows XP and Windows 2000.

And download this program :tazz:

Open the RegSearch folder and double click RegSearch.vbs. Allow it to run.

enter statblaster
RegSearch will "disappear" but it is actually searching the registry for that entry.

Copy and paste what it finds into a Notepad file.

huh. Curious. It found no instances of statblaster in the Registry. Could it be a ghost of viruses past? Or something malevolent and stealthy?

Scott,

Do the same thing now, but instead of statblaster enter in ncase

Thanks,

Double-click accountfour.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES. After the merged successfully prompt, please reboot your computer.

Let me know how that works out for you ;)

Hey, Tom. Sorry to be so long in replying. Had an old friend come into town for a couple of days.

Well, everything was successfully edited into the registry. The computer appears to be happy and clean now... I'm a bit suspicious. :tazz: ;)

Heh. If it is done, can you make some recommendations on how to give them the best precautions for the future? In addition to better surfing habits, of course!

Should I change the accounts to Limited User and create one to be Administrator? Or does that limit their ability to add programs and the like?

Or am I jumping the gun here, and there's still more to do?

Thanks!

Scott,

We are all done :tazz:

check out this prevention speech and feel free to ask me any questions about it ;)

Great job, it appears your computer is clean ;)

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE

Spybot S&D

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4

Spywareguard

IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 2 good free versions:

Sygate

ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox

Opera

This site is a great source for tightening up security on Internet Explorer settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Looks great, Tom!

So you think it unnecessary to change the regular accounts to Limited User, and nt leave them as Administrator as they currently are set?

I also meant to ask - Spybot has the Tea-Timer setting - should that be enabled?

I would think it would depend on the age and knowledge of the users, because depending on the settings, it could become very restrictive. If they are of age, education on how you got infected would be a very good idea

You might find this good reading for them http://forums.net-in...?showtopic=3051

Sure, any added protection would be a bonus. Makesure that you enable TeaTimer after you reset your new restore points. While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent fixes.

Thanks,

Tom,

In trying to restore acounts to their previous state, I've found that I can no longer turn on the Windows Firewall. Instead, I get an error stating that the Windows Firewall/ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) service cannot be started.

Did we do anything that would have affected this? I've found nothing relevant on MS site.

Scott,

Do you have another firewall running? If thats the case when you have two it usually will cause a conflict. I don't advise running the microsoft one, I would suggest downloading of the ones in my prevention speech. I use the Sygate and find it very user friendly.

Let me know.

Thanks,
