I hope I am in the right forum.
I recently inherited a Gateway Laptop ML6721 from a cousin who told me that the wifi has stopped working but will work through the LAN. I bought a Belkin N150 usb wifi adapter thinking it would solve the problem but the diagnostic states that the wireless is turned off. However it does not turn on no matter how many times I hit the key. Thanking you in advance for any suggestions.

What is your Operating System (Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8)?

On a laptop the key you mention is probably to enable/disable the network wireless card installed inside the laptop and not the external you add.

I suppose the problem could be that windows is detecting the bad wireless card, try to enter the BIOS and see if you have some option there to Disable the Wireless network card.

Let me know if you have that option or not and then we decide what to try next.

Hi Thanks for responding. The PC runs Window7 Ultimate I don't see a way to disable the network wireless card in the BIOS but there was a "reset to default settings" so I tried that and it worked. I now have wireless access. Thank you for your suggestion. I couldn't have solved it without your help. Thanks again.
