I've had my Dell Inspiron (Windows7) laptop for a while now and the "public" folders drive me beserk.
How can I get rid of them?
I've tried to file things in the other folders and delete them but they keep re-appearing.

Thanks

OK, Long story, short...LOL
I have always had XP on my pc and a while back, 2 years now, hubby got me a laptop, Dell Inspiron, Windows 7 64 bit,
anyways,
I proceeded to add some of my everyday files to the laptop.
I do a lot with Paint Shop Pro and I wanted to be able to do it on my laptop too.

OK, at first I put files on a flashdrive and transferred them to the laptop and everything was going fine.
I had to get use to Libraries and such but I thought I had a system going until one day these "Public" folders showed up in my files.

I went along with it for the time being, thinking it was something I had to learn about Windows7.

Well, before I knew it they took over and I couldn't find anything that I had transferred, so, I made new folders under "My Pictures" which is where I keep my sigs and tags and things and all was fine.
All of a sudden whenever I went looking for something, again, I couldn't find it and the "Public" folders showed up again and some of my files were in them.

Now, I'm not too good with Windows7 cause I use my pc the most but these "Public" files keep disappearing and then reappearing.

Is it me? What are they and how can I get rid of them?

I'm the sole user of my pc and laptop so why do I need these "public" folders?

Sorry, but I guess it isn't long story.....short, but I didn't know any other way to describe it.
They disappear, so, I make new folders and put things in them, and then they reappear and now I have the same things saved all over the place.

Are you sorry you asked? LMBO

I never use the Libraries links when storing files, only when referencing them. I often find that files don't show up in the Libraries links, no idea why.

I use

C:\Users\myaccount\My Documents
C:\Users\myaccount\My Pictures
C:\Users\myaccount\My Photos
etc.

Never have a problem that way.

I have not found a way to get rid of the public folders. I'll keep looking though.

No luck. Any posts I've found where the public folders were deleted, they were recreated. I think you are stuck with them.

I have googled and binged looking for some way to get rid of them and noboby knows, or, other people's have reappeared too.
UGH!!!
I'm going to go and carefully move anything I have filed in them and see if they disappear.
Maybe if they are empty they will. LOL

Weird situation.

Thanks

Hmmm, this seems to have worked for me just now.

Open Windows Explorer.
Right click on Documents under Libraries and select Properties.
Select Public Documents then click the Remove button then click Apply.
Repeat for Music, Pictures and Video.

Before:
WithPublic.jpg

After:
NoPublic.jpg

Public folders are a way to share between computers with no networking limitations. They reside under the C:\Users\Public folder tree.

I find them useless as I always setup what I want to share between my computers.
