Gday cadassi,
I use a magnetic tipped #2 Phillips head screwdriver, a #1 flat blade screwdriver, a small pair of snips and an anti static wrist strap. > http://www.maplin.co...ing-cable-zt91y That's all you need to build a computer.
Fixing a Desktop computer, same tools and a 850 watt quality PSU, that's easy. The hard part is diagnosing what is wrong.
Laptops, you will need some screwdrivers with special tips, quite hard to work one, service manuals can be hard to come bye. best left to specialists, you could work on your own but fairly high risk of disaster without having some experience.
Repairing computers. very costly for test equipment, Beyond most people without having technical training. Visit a local repair shop, ask them if they would not mind showing you what they use to do repairs, that will give you some idea.

Your welcome cadassi
There are lots of how to, for computers hardware on the Web and diagnosing problems like this, > http://www.geekstogo...01#entry2369301
Ask your friends if they have broken down rigs they will give you to see if you can get them going. The one item you should never mess around with or try to actually repair, is the PSU.
