Computer was working fine, then we set it to install the latest updates, and the next morning we can't get on the internet.

It can still download windows updates, it shows it's connected, and reports no problems on diagnostics and repairs.

Can connect to internet in safe mode

I have tried

Switching the cables
Restarting the router

Checked the LAN settings on ie to make sure the proxy server was empty and unchecked

Updated drivers

Ran anti malwarebytes as well as super anti virus scans in safe mode

System restored to a point before the update/it was working

Ran a clean start (boot?)

It shows it's connected, but cannot connect on any web browser. (Tried Firefox, chrome, ie)

Have you tried to remove your Anti-Virus program (specially if Norton) your problem is often caused by the antivirus blocking web browsers so this is why your PC reports a good connection but your browsers will not connect.

If you do have Norton please use the program NORTON REMOVAL TOOL https://support.nort...erProfile_en_us
This tool will remove it completely compare to the usual add/remove program that will leave traces of Norton on your PC.

Hope that helps

The computer had norton some years ago, it's "uninstalled" but I think it still pops up here and then. I will try the norton removal tool.

The only security programs I have running are anti malwarebytes, super anti spyware (just downloaded this after the issues started to run another scan) and some new thing called "Microsoft security center" which appeared after the latest windows update. It has the interface and options of something like norton. Come to think of it, is this program a legit Microsoft feature? I have tried disabling and uninstalling it. But I still cannot get online

I can install updates, use google earth etc with internet connection, but I just can't get any browsers to make that connection.

I was on the phone with bell for 2 hours last night. They are receiving pings from this computer. And internet is working fine.

Microsoft security center is the name of a rogue antivirus which needs to be removed in the malware removal forum.

  • You need to read this article.
  • Follow the directions to create an OTL log and post it and the Extras log in a new topic here.
  • Then after your computer is declared clean you can return to this topic if you are still having connectivity problems.

Microsoft Security Essentials is not distributed via Windows U0pdates. I'm curious as to where it came from if you didn't install it.
