I am helping a friend with a printer problem. It is a Dell tower with Win 7. The printer is an HP All in One.

The printer driver has failed to install completely after several tries. The printer will print, but not scan.

The driver fails to install completely on the status bar and it produces an error message saying the installation

failed.

  • I have download and used the HP scrubber to remove the old install.
  • Disabled AV ( MSE)
  • Checked all the WIA dependencies and cable connections.
  • Stopped all third party processes

Any suggestions would be welcome !!

Hello Dave46

Hp printers can be a pain in the proverbial to install sometimes.

Was the USB cable disconnected when you installed the software and only attached when prompted by an on screen message.

Try the HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows from here

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I used the doctor and he said the driver failed to install

I followed the onscreen instructions for the USB cable. I only plugged it in when it

said to.

This PC had a previous minor malware problem that had been cleaned by Malwarebytes

and Adwcleaner. It is running fine now.

Would the malware or cleaners have damaged the files ? I ran SFC / Scannow and the files

seem OK.

The mysterious part is , it will print

Hi Dave,

I have had the same issue with a previous HP all in one and it was related to the HP software not installing correctly, are you using a disk that was provided with the printer or a download from HP, if a disk try downloading from HP as there may be a hotfix included with it for such an issue, is the HP ticked as the default printer in the Control Panel.

Hi Phil,

I tried both plug and play install, with Windows getting the latest driver, and downloading the full

install from HP.

The device manager and the devices/printers section both show a yellow caution symbol. They won't

let me make it the default printer.

Is it possible to do a manual uninstall of the driver with Revo or another uninstaller ?

Where is the driver located ? Also do you know what file extension it would be ?

Thanks for your help !!

Hi Dave,

Sorry can`t help with the exact location of the scanner driver only the driver package.

Just a thought but have you tried the Vista drivers to see if they will work.

Can you post the model number for the printer so I can dig around.

If you wish to uninstall the printer and drivers manually below are the steps, you could do this and then use the HP printer wizard here and check the troubleshooting steps here

Click on the Windows start Orb.
In the search field, type Print Management and then click on it above when it populates the above search field.

The program should open and you will see a folder called 'Custom filters'.
Expand it and click on 'All Printers'.
This will show you any installed printers.
Locate the printer/s that you want to remove.
Right-click, select 'delete' to delete the HP (+ any other unused printers).

Next, you need to remove the driver associated with the print queue you just deleted.
Click on the folder called 'All Drivers'.
Scroll through the list of installed drivers.
Find the driver(s) for the printer/s you wish to remove.
Right click a driver and choose 'Remove Driver Package'.
This should uninstall the driver.

When done, close the Print Management utility.

Before attempting to reinstall the printer I would reboot to restart the print spooler service.

You are welcome btw :)

Hi Phil,

This is the printer. HP 209a

I also tried two third party scanner programs with no luck. ScanVue is supposed to have its own driver

but it would not work.

Thanks for your help !!

Hello Dave,

Not sure if you have checked out the solution here

If no joy still, something that may help your friend while you look for a permanent solution is Scan using Internet browsers from HP printers
