Over the past year that I have had my laptop (it is older than one year, was a hand me down from my mother), it has had moments of amazing speed but more frequently is seems to have moments in between where it is just completely useless. It runs smooth for about 2 months with me playing games such as League of Legends at 60 FPS and Diablo 3 at about 40 FPS. But in these moments of time where it is complete crap I can't even get the games past 5 FPS.
I have Windows 7 and run the display to be best for performance standards.
I have an Intel Duo Core Processor with 1.40 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, and run on a 32 bit operating system.
I have done both a malware and adware scan and it came up empty.
I also ran a Computer Restore to about a week ago when everything ran smoothly but it still cannot run anything, not even 144p youtube videos.
I have also defragged and cleaned it up to no avail.
I have all my drivers up to date and honestly have no idea what to do.
Please help.
Also, if this is of any help.

Well there are a few questions. Some you don't have to answer publicly but should consider anyways.

Windows Ultimate, most computers dont come with that installed. My first suspicion is it is not g e nuine. (Not trying to accuse but bootlegs are not always reliable)
What antivirus are running? Are there more than 1?
Your drive is 320G so I'm wondering if it has space, over 70% full its time to consider upgrading or removing files.
How old is the HD? It possibly could be failing or has a lot of bad sectors.
Just because you ran one malware and one spyware program doesn't by any means conclude you are not infected, especially if its a root kit.
2 Gigs of RAM on a duo core is not a lot of power to run games (just a note here)

These are just some things to consider...

I at first guessed that but it only happens occasionally so I threw that out the window. It is slow for maybe 2 weeks and it is back to normal but I was looking to a solution to halt the random mishaps of my slow computer. When I get back to my own personal computer I will verify the things you have said. Thank you.

I have 200GB Free of 297GB. I am unsure how to tell how old my HD is, not that great with computers other than the basic clean and sweep kind of stuff. And to the comment of the duo core not being good for gaming, it seems to work fine if I play on low graphics, but as said before, there comes random moments in time where everything is unplayable; including 144p youtube videos at which I normally watch at 720p+.

Hello Scoern

To help with performance turn off Aero;

Right-click on the Desktop.
Click Personalize
Within the Personalize Window scroll down to the Windows 7 basic theme and select it.

Disable NVidea PowerMizer with Nv GPU Tweak Tool (free) which is available from here

For long term all round improvement upgrade your Ram to 4 GB (2 X 2GB sticks) when you can.

As an asides your OS Installation Date: 9/24/2011 4:28:27 PM and the fact that as of the 03/16/2014 it was fully up to date suggests that it is a legitimate installation ;)

Alright, so hey, this worked great since the day you told me but now the problem is back again. I'm still on basic theme and still have the NVidea PowerMizer disabled but the problem is back. Any ideas?

My laptop has become extremely slow again and I'm trying to make it last until I can purchase a new one. Same issues as before, I can't play games past 3 FPS and cannot watch videos past 144p. Your last solution worked for a month and now it is back to the same problem.

Please and thank you.

Best suggestion is to tidy up the data on your HDD, please follow the directions provided below starting with Autoruns http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.

2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".

3: Click on the "Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries” tab

4: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.

5: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.

6: Attach to your next reply.

Autoruns Tutorial

2nd: Download and run TFC from http://www.geekstogo...er-by-oldtimer/ the computer should automatically re-boot on completion but if not do it manually.

3rd: Defrag your HDD http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/  a tidy drive is a faster drive, please note that I am not suggesting that you use any other product or service at the link.

To speed up your boot times find any unnecessary programs linked to start up "how to" below;

START -> RUN

type MSCONFIG in the RUN box

then click OK

Click on the start-up TAB

Look at each line that has a check in the box, these are start-up items, with the exception of Windows programs and your AV software uncheck the ones you do not want to run at start-up.

Done, done, and done.
AutoRuns didn't have the tab but on the bottom right it stated that Microsoft and Windows entries were hidden without me having to do anything, so I hope it's correct.

Autoruns log is not too bad.

Disable the following;

All Adobe entries

All Java entries

All Google entries

Rosetta Stone

All Skype entries

Steam

SunJava

You should also make sure that Java is not enabled in your browser as it is deemed a security risk, if you need to use it for certain video sites always disable it when done, if you don`t use it at all then uninstall it.

What is the driver date for your Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card? Check Device Manager.

Have you tried the Broadcom 440x 10/100 Ethernet to see if Youtube, games, etc... run faster?
